Killing the Rising Sun: How America Vanquished World War II Japan, by Bill O'Reilly, Martin Dugard

The powerful and riveting new book in the multimillion-selling Killing series by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard

Autumn 1944. World War II is nearly over in Europe but is escalating in the Pacific, where American soldiers face an opponent who will go to any length to avoid defeat. The Japanese army follows the samurai code of Bushido, stipulating that surrender is a form of dishonor. Killing the Rising Sun takes readers to the bloody tropical-island battlefields of Peleliu and Iwo Jima and to the embattled Philippines, where General Douglas MacArthur has made a triumphant return and is plotting a full-scale invasion of Japan.

Across the globe in Los Alamos, New Mexico, Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer and his team of scientists are preparing to test the deadliest weapon known to mankind. In Washington, DC, FDR dies in office and Harry Truman ascends to the presidency, only to face the most important political decision in history: whether to use that weapon. And in Tokyo, Emperor Hirohito, who is considered a deity by his subjects, refuses to surrender, despite a massive and mounting death toll. Told in the same page-turning style of Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy, Killing Jesus, Killing Patton, and Killing Reagan, this epic saga details the final moments of World War II like never before.

Review

“An enthralling, gripping account of the bloody battles, huge decisions, and historic personalities that culminated in the decision to drop the atomic bomb and brought the war in the Pacific to its climactic end. A masterful, meticulously researched work that captures the barbarity of the war waged by those who swore allegiance to the Japanese Emperor – and by those who crushed the military might of the Rising Sun.”

– General David H. Petraeus, commander of the surge in Iraq (2007-8) and coalition forces in Afghanistan (2010-2011)

"Killing the Rising Sun" is a Truly Outstanding Historical Book, which is Decidedly Informative, Gripping, and Thought-Provoking
By KRMD
During one of his recent Factor programs, Bill O'Reilly announced that his new book with Martin Dugard is entitled "Killing the Rising Sun: How America Vanquished World War II Japan." This book specifically examines the Pacific Theater, and it places special emphasis and focus on the painstaking analysis, difficult judgement calls, and crucial tactical decisions which formulated the strategy that ultimately brought about the defeat of Imperial Japan by the United States and its Allies. As has been the case with their previous historical works, Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard have written a truly outstanding book, which is decidedly informative, gripping, and thought-provoking, and which provides a unique perspective on the pivotal events of the Pacific Campaign. They employ a very straightforward and conversational style of writing, which most readers find candid and engaging. In addition, they make this incredibly harrowing and horrific war experience very real for their readers, by including numerous back stories and personal experiences of the actual Marines, Army Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen who served in the Pacific Campaign, along with many vivid accounts of the unimaginable suffering endured by the civilian victims of this tragic conflict. By virtue of the fact that Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard have reignited an interest in history with their series of "Killing" books, they have made an invaluable contribution to millions of readers, with their depictions of the momentous and transformational events of the past. For this extraordinary achievement, they are to be truly commended! I enthusiastically give "Killing the Rising Sun: How America Vanquished World War II Japan" a five-star rating, along with my highest recommendation.

By Pat
My Father was in the 41st and did not speak a great deal about his 4 years but did tell me it was a ravaging time for him and the men that fought these battles. I always felt he tried his best to forget many of his actions. He died at the age of 93 in 2012, so I never really questioned him about the South Pacific and was very happy to read this riveting story. I now understand (somewhat) why he did not want to talk much about his "days in the War" and the unspeakable atrocities that were committed by both sides. Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard do quite a thorough job describing these battles. This was a very good read for me but it was also heartbreaking to read of all the death and destruction the war and the bomb provided.

I highly recommended this book to my family
By Jim Hargis
This was an outstanding, no-nonsense account of what took place in the Pacific theatre during WW II. I highly recommended this book to my family, and friends. Agree with the many that had said it does read like a novel with such vivid accounts that transports one to the scene. Full of excellent historical information with tons of references to boot which was a big help for those that are curious to gain even more insights. An awesome book.

The Secret of the Golden Cowrie
By Aidyl
Connie is set on proving herself to her older brother, Dan. She feels like it's her chance when she goes on a spur-of-the-moment trip with her mother and Dan, to help out their Aunt Laura who fell down and got hurt. Or wait, did she fall, or was she pushed by an intruder like she claims? Hearing rumors that Aunt Laura is getting older and might be losing her mind a little, Connie is surprised at how witty and full of life Aunt Laura turns out to be.

Aunt Laura's huge shell collection is a sight to behold, and Connie is surprised when she finds that one of the shells is missing, and there might just be a way she can find it. Excited at the chance to prove herself, Connie dives in head first. Stella, the lady who's also staying with them and befriends Connie, also offers to teach Connie some about photography, which makes Connie feel like she could walk on air. Also, Ricky, a boy Connie meets turns out to be fun to hang around. But when there's another break-in, Connie realizes it's a little bit more serious than she had thought.

When riddles, secret doors and missing shells are all combined, a mystery sits waiting to be solved. Will Connie be able to solve it by herself? Or will she have to get help? And what about Aunt Laura, is she actually crazy after all?

This is the first book I read by Gloria Repp, which I read when I was about 10. A few years later I ended up making my own riddle for my little siblings, reading this book to them as one of the clues. There are parts when I was totally frustrated with Connie, wishing she could see what was right in front of her face, but that just made the book all the better, since everything wasn't `perfect'. The Secret of the Golden Cowrie is a great book, with good Christian principles.

What does "senile" mean, anyway?
By A Customer
Connie has heard a lot about her Aunt Laura, including the fact that she is "senile".(whatever that means) She isn't so sure that a visit with her is a good thing. On the other hand, it could be exciting. Aunt Laura doesn't seem so very strange, and Stella, the lady who is staying with her, knows all about birds and cameras. Aunt Laura shares a secret problem with Connie. What if Connie could find a way to help her? As Connie trys to do just that, she finds herself in the middle of a mystery.

Progressive failure has been a classical problem in the field of geotechnical engineering and has attracted considerable attention in connection with slope stability and foundation problems. It is associated with strain localization or shear banding and is also related to damage in material structures. As knowledge of the progressive failure mechanism increases, it is now necessary to establish effective communications between researchers and engineers.

The International Symposium on Deformation and Progressive Failure in Geomechanics provided an opportunity for discussing recent advances in this area.

A total of 136 papers were contributed from 22 countries. As well as these, the symposium proceedings also contain 8 interim technical reports on the subject by the members of the Asian Technical Committee of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering and the Japanese Geotechnical Society National Committee on Progressive Failure in Geo-structures.

"The phrase ’seeing the elephant’ symbolized for ’49 gold rushers the exotic, the mythical, the once-in-a-lifetime adventure, unequaled anywhere else but in the journey to the promised land of fortune: California. Most western myths . . . generally depict an exclusively male gold rush. Levy’s book debunks that myth. Here a variety of women travel, work, and write their way across the pages of western migrant history."-Choice

From Publishers Weekly
In the literature of the Gold Rush, women have been generally neglected. Freelance writer Levy here corrects that oversight with a colorful account of intrepid female argonauts--with and without men. She draws on letters, journals and reminiscences for a fresh view of western history. The women traveled overland, by ship round the Horn (one family survived three burning ships); they crossed the Isthmus of Panama by mule, and Nicaragua by steamship and mule. In California they ran boardinghouses, provided meals and laundry service for miners, and organized schools and churches. The cast of characters includes actresses and prostitutes, a stagecoach driver and ordinary women seeking to make a new home. Levy does for the Gold Rush what Lillian Schlissel did for the Plains emigrants in Women's Diaries of the Westward Journey . The book is a welcome addition to regional history as well as to women's studies. Illustrated.

From School Library Journal
YA-- In this exciting and inspiring account of the women who helped settle California, Levy explores the leadership roles of those who contributed to the founding of businesses, towns, and mining camps. Photographs, letters, and diary accounts contribute to the realism of these adventures.

From Library Journal
Not just another book about the California Gold Rush, this account of the over-looked "gold rushing women" makes a significant contribution to the scholarship of women's studies. Quoting from letters, diaries, and reminiscences, California native Levy skillfully weaves together the stories of two dozen women, re-creating the experience of thousands. Liberated from social restraints, the women Argonauts worked as "boarding house keepers and miners, missionaries and actresses, church builders and gamblers, school teachers and temperance speakers, even a Wells Fargo & Company stage driver." Devotees of Californiana will enjoy this adventure story. Scholars will value the extensive bibliography and the biographical postscripts.

Marvelous book
By Cleo Griffith
This is one of the most interesting books on women's history I have read. Told in the words of diaries and letters by the women at the time of the California Gold Rush this brings a vivid picture of the life-styles of this rugged time, and the hardships suffered as well as the triumphs. I was engrossed as have been the friends to whom I have loaned the book...a wonderful piece of California history, should be read by everyone who is the least bit interested in this state -- not to mention the many states from which the women traveled. Read a few pages -- I think you will be hooked.

Seeing the Elephant
By Suthrenlady
This is an amazing account of the women's experiences from starting the journey to being established in California. The author has taken great pains to document their stories while keeping the reader fascinated. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history.
