Perilous but possible, say Heifetz and Linsky in their encouragingly practical guide to putting yourself on the line and negotiating the hazards of leadership. As the authors acknowledge, many leadership books are "all about inspiration, but downplay the perspiration." This one doesn't. Leadership is always a risky business, but those risks can be understood and reduced. Effective leadership comes from doing more than the technical work of routine management; it involves adaptive work on the part of the leader, and a willingness to confront and disturb people, promote their resourcefulness, and engage their ability to adjust to new realities. But adaptive change always encounters resistance. Heifetz and Linsky examine four forms of resistance--marginalization, diversion, attack, and seduction--before presenting a number of practical resistance-response skills to nurture and employ. Some are fairly obvious (like developing and maintaining perspective, and holding steady in the midst of change), and others more complex (like thinking politically when dealing with friends, foes, and fence sitters), but shimmering nuggets of insight and practical wisdom can be found in each. The dangers of leadership also spring from within, however, and the book's final section addresses ways to recognize and manage competing "hungers" and learn to distinguish one's roles from one's self. Recognizing that it can be both lonely and difficult at the top, the authors faculty members of Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government set out to lend emotional and practical support. Whether leaders represent a local planning board or a Fortune 500 company, they "live dangerously," say the authors, "because when leadership counts, when you lead people through difficult change, you challenge what people hold dear their daily habits, tools, loyalties, and ways of thinking with nothing more to offer perhaps than a possibility." To that end, Heifetz and Linsky offer useful strategies leaders can employ, such as building political constituencies, trying to orchestrate the inevitable conflict, and forcing those who cause problems to actually solve the problems. Indeed, the book does dwell on the negative aspects of leadership, serving more as a troubleshooting guide than a how-to leadership handbook. Some of the examples are informal (e.g., the 1994 Chicago Bulls), while others are more traditional (e.g., city planning and politics). Showing a sympathetic side, Heifetz and Linsky offer tactics to help leaders not to take conflict personally. Remember, they counsel, you are more than your job. This book will undoubtedly provide leaders and managers comfort on days when everything seems to be going wrong in their department or organization.

A Must Read for Ministers

This is one of the best leadership books I have ever read. It is more than a business book, there is a spiritual component to it. The book talks about the difficulty of leadership, and mostly about staying alive in the process. In leadership, you are dangerous to people. The reason is that you are challenging the norm, which is unnerving for people. You are moving a group of people forward, and people feel a loss. But the key is moving people forward at a rate they can handle. As ministers, this is important lessons. A leader might too quickly move forward, not realizing the emotional attachment to the past. When you do this, there are going to be consequence, you can become attacked, marginalized, diverted, or seduced. There are natural tactics for those who are seeking to stop the progress. The book deals with some uncommon material, but not uncommon areas of concern for leadership. It talks about keeping security around you. This is a group of people who are trusted, and will tell you the truth, it means keeping your wife close, because a leader can be seduced with sex. This book comes to the heart of leadership, and the pleasure and pains of it better than almost all books on the topic. It talks about pre-meetings, not that this has happened in the church. It talks about stalk holders, are those with the most to lose with a change. Often a leader surrounds themselves with those who agree, but in reality, he needs to stay most connected to those who disagree. The people who are the quickest to stand with you, are often the ones with the lest to loose. Therefore those who oppose you, are the ones that will stand most with you in the long run. It talks about handling distress. Ok, this book talks about the heart of leadership, and there are so many topics that are addressed, it is just one of the best, and for preachers, it is a key book. Sometimes I am excited for a book, and there are times when this book should be in the classroom of every graduate school across the nation. It is that good and helpful.

A leadership book without peers; but Parks' book is a great companion

Heifetz and Linsky have a gem here. I'm loathe to use the metaphor of a jewel here, because it connotes you being static while visually observing the gem, and that you would at least infer the value of what you are looking at.

A better, and closer approximation, would be someone who has a pass at a concert, who can go backstage, observe the performers responding to the band leader/conductor/take your pick, pick up an instrument and play along, then move out into the audience, and observe them enjoying the performance (attentive sitting/swaying/dancing...), and participate with the audience as well. That kind of participation, and the value of it, is more of what I'm aiming toward.

That is-in part-what happens when you read Heifetz: you begin a new and risky journey of awareness, knowing there is a destination, but it's not "a destination in mind" per se. That journey of awareness is one that Heifetz encourages the reader to develop and deepen in their leadership. And, as others will confirm, Heifetz outlines other tasks and dynamic postures to cultivate while on this risky journey: you know that the journey is important, but there's not a lot of road maps or preconceived notions of even what to look for that is important.

Now, because there are so many neologisms and loaded phrases, one can get bogged down early: as I did. Thankfully, I read Heifetz in parallel with Sharon Daloz Parks' book, Leadership Can Be Taught: A Bold Approach for a Complex World. As others I know will confirm, reading both books shed light on Heifetz in ways that would elude most people if they only read his text. Plus, Parks' own experience as a professor and mentor is illuminated as she engages with Heifetz. (No, I'm not related to Parks, nor am I receiving anything for this plug.) So, I would highly recommend both books in that task of Heifetz' sub-title, "Staying Alive...".

More than insightful

What is particularly important about this book is that it begs to be read over again as ones career or role progresses. When read for the first time it is with the mindset/ point of view of where one is at that time in their profession. In another company/role/job the scene and players change. And, picking up the book to read, once again, it is as if you barely read it the first time. The authors bungee jump between ideas and real lessons; they dissect the learning and tie it back their understanding about the perils of taking a stand, and leading. They use metaphors that stick and resonate to such an extent one weaves them into their own vocabulary: song beneath the words, getting on the balcony, giving back the work or managing your hungers. The books serves as a building block towards one's own mental model of what leadership means whether you are early in your career or already in the C-suite, because the landscape is always shifting and those mental models serve as an anchor.

Learning good manners will help your child act toward others with respect and take into account their feelings. Your child will also gain the confidence that comes from knowing the proper thing to do. As a parent, you're sure to discover it's a gradual process. While your children will put into practice a few good manners, you'll need to remind them often of others. Start with the basics, and enjoy the journey together!

How early should you start teaching manners?

Parents begin teaching manners by example as soon as a child is born. While our children might do what we say, they are more likely to do what we do. First-time parents may find it shocking to hear their child spout an off-color phrase she learned from a parent. Whether we like it or not, learning usually takes place in the home, through imitation.

It's a good idea to teach your child one new chore each year. If a child learns to make a bed at age three, at age four he can begin emptying the wastebaskets, and by five start to set or clear the table. Try a similar approach with manners. Teach your child a few manners--and when he's mastered those, start on a few more. Lay a foundation and begin to build on it. Expect basic manners from a five-year-old, and more from a ten-year-old. You'll be amazed how many compliments you'll get by the time your child reaches adolescence.

A three-year-old should:

- Establish eye contact when speaking to another.
- Say hello.
- Wash hands before and after a meal.
- Stay seated during the meal.
- Use utensils at the table.
- Say "please" and "thank you."

A ten-year-old should:
- Be able to hold a conversation with an adult.
- Use good table manners.
- Answer the telephone properly and take careful messages.
- Show self-control in public places.
- Take responsibility for keeping the bedroom neat.
- Stand when an adult enters the room.
- Know how to be on time.

A fifteen-year-old should:
- Initiate conversation and show interest with adults.
- Pick up after herself and her friends at home.
- Maintain a noise level that is acceptable to the family.
- Be protective and kind toward younger siblings.
- Express appreciation to parents and others.

January 2
There's no place like home

Some families are on their best behavior when they go out but like to kick back at home. They also let this philosophy govern their manners. Sarah Ferguson, the duchess of York, once told a reporter about her formula for good manners at the table. She and her daughters have A, B, and C manners, she explained. When they're dining with the queen at Buckingham Palace, they use their very best A manners. When they're at a restaurant, they're more relaxed, so they use their B manners. And at home? They're even less proper; C manners are fine.

Contrast Fergie's philosophy with pre-Civil War Eliza Farrar's. "Would it not be more refined and honest," she wrote in The Young Ladies Friend (1834), "to live a little better every day and make less a parade before company?"

There may be some value in being relaxed at home, but at what cost? One of your goals as a parent is for good manners to become habits for your child. If chewing with his mouth closed is necessary when he's out but not when he's at home, chances are he won't chew properly at home or when he's out. Having different codes of manners can be confusing to your child and not very practical in the long run. It's a bit like telling a pianist that how he plays at home doesn't matter as long as he performs well at a recital.

Parents can save themselves some headaches and teach children that the family deserves to see their best behavior. Here are a few ways parents can encourage children to help make home a nice place to be. Suggest that they:

1. Talk to their parents. Say "good morning" and "good night."

2. Respect the privacy of others. Don't listen in on phone conversations, read others' mail, or snoop in their closets.

3. Knock gently on a closed door before entering.

4. Use good table manners.

5. Borrow items only if they've asked to do so. Return them in good condition.

6. Spend time with their siblings. Don't hibernate in the bedroom.

7. Ask family members how things are going.

8. Use an "indoor voice" when they're in the house.

9. Pick up after themselves.

10. Don't let their goodbyes be accompanied by unkind words.

Activity

Post the above list on your refrigerator and compliment your child when he puts one of the rules into practice. If your child likes to create things on the computer, have him design the list for the fridge.

January 3
"Please," "thank you," and "I'm sorry"

Sometimes a child's good manners reveal a naturally sunny, kind disposition. This isn't always the case, but practicing good manners helps a child begin to develop consideration for others.

By following good manners in daily life, we learn to control ourselves and become aware of how our actions and words affect others. At some point, with enough practice, the learned formalities become second nature.

This is certainly the case with saying "please," "thank you," and "I'm sorry."

As soon as a child is able to extend a chubby little hand and ask for a cookie, you should encourage him to say "please." As soon as he is old enough to be given a gift, prompt him to say "thank you." As soon as he can offend another person, "I'm sorry" should become part of his vocabulary. Your child may still believe he's the center of the universe, but his words should reveal a person who cares for other's feelings.

"Please" should be part of every request. Insist that your child say, "May I please have a drink?" If the child is very young, "Drink, please" is okay.

"Thank you" should always acknowledge receipt of an item, favor, or kindness. Children should use it when they are handed a cookie, when they've been given a gift, or when they've visited someone's home.

"I'm sorry" (not "I didn't mean to!"): These two words can calm rough tempers, smooth hurt feelings, and give everyone a fresh start. Children should say this when they break something, make another child cry, or forget to do a chore, for example.

Activity
Use the prompt-and-praise method for reinforcing the use of the kind words in this lesson. Prompt your child in private about when to say "please" and "thank you." Praise him in private after he puts your suggestions into action. Also, always say "I'm sorry" to your child when you're wrong about something.

January 4
Apologizing

Children should be encouraged to make "please" and "thank you" a daily part of their vocabulary. But two other small but powerful words belong there, too: "I'm sorry."

When a child inadvertently bumps into another child in the hall at school, "I'm sorry" is the right thing to say. When she realizes she's taken a second brownie before someone else has had a first, "I'm sorry" helps her appear polite. When your child is late, forgets to bring her uniform, or lets her pet dig in the neighbor's garden, "I'm sorry" shows she can take responsibility for her actions. Little offenses stay little when they are acknowledged and apologized for. When nothing is said, they could ruin a friendship.

At times an apology needs to be written. Your child doesn't need to apologize in writing for small offenses if she's had a chance to apologize verbally, and she shouldn't apologize too much or if she's done nothing wrong.

But if your child breaks something or betrays a friend by revealing a secret, a short note of apology can accompany the replacement of the broken item or a bag of candy for the wounded friend. A note of apology might look like this:

Dear Alicia,

I am so sorry I told Kelsie that you're getting glasses. You told me to keep it a secret and I went and blabbed it anyway. I know you're worried about what it will be like and I only made matters worse. Please forgive me. You're my best friend and I feel terrible that I hurt your feelings.

lessons to teach as a GIFT!

I just got this book and flipped through it and read the first few chapters. 365 is a lot of manners coverage! You'll see current topics that are not included in the old yellowing pages of etiquette books from the past like "e-mail," but the old standards are there too that never change such as "addressing others properly." Check out the Table of Contents for what it covers.

Why is it important to teach children manners? This should not be just another method of trying to control them. Teaching manners is a gift! How many uncomfortable situations can be avoided when we know what behavior is expected of us. Children like everyone want to fit in and be accepted.

What I like best about this book is that these lessons, addressed to the parent, show respect for the child. For example: "Prompt your child in private about when to say please and thank you." (Is it not the height of rudeness to correct a child's manners in public?) "Children should not be prompted against their will to kiss people for whom they don't naturally feel affection." Let adults earn the affection of your children, while you insist on courtesy.

When possible give the child a chance to act out the behavior in the lesson. This can be humorous and fun, and will make the lesson stick better. Some items can be made into a game: I'll give you a star sticker each morning that you say "Good morning" to me!

The most helpful resource so far

After reviewing several books on manners, this was the most helpful. Since I’m looking for application in an international context, I needed something that dealt both with specifics, but more importantly with broad principles that don’t necessarily come from Victorian England.

Most of the materials I found usually fell into one of two extremes: Dry, dull, useless attempts to turn American culture back 100 years or silly, gross, stupid attempts at making manners appealing to small children. Sheryl Eberly got it right by focusing on the important principles, then applying them to a modern context. The sections on technology were particularly helpful.

Improved manners

This has been a great conversation piece for dinner each night with my 4 boys. We have all learned some new manners and practiced them. It doesn't take more than 5 minutes a night and I have seen an improvement in the way my boys think. Even my husband has been more conscious about things.

Interesting But Annoyingly Dated

The book is built around the election of a Russian Pope and then describes his trials and tribulations. The book was written in the early 1960s and may have seemed bold at the time, but subsequent true-life Vatican history has been more intriguing, thus rendering this book kinda tame. So, I found myself reading it mainly for the description of how a pope goes about his days. There's not much of a plot here. There is a lot of Catholic theology and emotional stress, but it's not the kind of book that will keep you up till 3 in the morning (although I just finished it -- at 3 in the morning!) West is an excellent writer and hardly a page goes by when I am not impressed by his command of the language and his insight into papal thought. So, as I say, it was interesting, but annoyingly dated.

The Shoes of the Fisherman

One of my favourite books! I had read it not long after it was published in the 1960s and I decided I wanted to read it again (but had long ago given my copy away. I bought a secondhand copy from Amazon and it is just as relevant today as it was then. The main reason I wanted to re-read it was because of the newly elected Pope being Russian - he seems to have some of the qualities of the pope in this book and I hope he has the same attitude to the wealth of the Catholic church. Highly recommended

Thoughts of a Pope

A prescient book about the future Popes, evidently published the day John XXIII died.
Prescient in that John Paul 1 evidently wanted to give much of the Churches wealth to help the poor and John Paul II was from Eastern Europe (Poland).
Interesting extracts from the Pope's 'diary' where he writes his personal thoughts about wanting to make his mark on the Vatican and the world.
I was a bit disappointed in the end where it was rather left hanging without a final climactic action but overall an excellent read.
The film of the book had a better finale but was only loosely based on the book (inspired by?).The Shoes of the Fisherman

About the Author

James Valentino holds a doctorate in applied mechanics from the Polytechnic University of New York. He has over 25 years experience teaching technology courses and many years in industry. Currently, he is professor and chairperson of the department of Mechanical Engineering Technology & Design Drafting at Queensborough Community College (CUNY). He is a member of Sigma XI, a senior member of SME, and coauthor of Learning Mastercam X2 Mill Step-by-Step, also published by Industrial Press.

Joseph Goldenberg is Associate Professor, Department of Engineering Technology, and Director of Manufacturing Processes Laboratory at Queensborough Community College, New York. Professor Goldenberg holds an Engineer Degree in Machine Tool Technology, Lvov Polytechnic institute, USSR; and an MS in Manufacturing Engineering, Brooklyn Polytechnic University. He has PhD equivalency, granted by CUNY Board of Trusties; and holds the EIT in New York State. With over 45 years of experience as a mechanical engineer and machine tool designer, Goldenberg is an expert in CNC, CAD/CAM programming, and manufacturing management. He is the founder and President of the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Studies, a company dedicated to training and advising manufacturing personnel in the latest developments of CNC and CADCAM technology.

Learning Mastercam X7 Mill Step by Step - A Good Investment for Student or Employee for the 2013 Sofware Release

Valentino and Goldenberg are also authors of a one of the best "intro to CNC" books published in recent years. If you are new to industrial CNC or are taking a skilled trades course involving Mastercam then this instructional book will provide excellent value and in my opinion contains considerably more detail that is not found in the competing CamInstructor series of training guides that typically used in conjunction with the Haas CNC mills and lathes found at most technical colleges in North America skilled trades programs. It would be very interesting to hear from others how they compare this book and the comprehensive series by Matthew Manton and Duane Weidinger that is also highly recommended if you want to learn Mastercam 2D, 3D 4&5D axis CNC mill software. If you use Mastercam X7 2D Mill at your place of employment then this step by step training guide may still be very useful to you. I have heard more than one exprienced user of Mastercam state that the software is so powerful they still are learning how to use its evolving functionality and new high speed toolpaths. If you are already an expert with older versions of Mastercam then this book will help serve as a reference to the new version released in 2013 assuming your employer hasn't sent you to an accelerated training course. One important caveat: The incorporation of the Mastercam Demo X7 HLE software on DVD and lessons are worth the purchase of the book alone. The included software will allow you to practice creating 2D mill geometry and assigning toolpaths, but will NOT allow you to output the result as G code that would make the part. To do that you will need to pay the folks at Mastercam for a seat and a valid SIM which with all the bells and whistles could easily run $25K upfront. For those home CNC hobbyists who are just getting started please understand that Mastercam software is used by many shops and companies who do not want to invest in the steep learning curve or typical expense of ~$40K seat cost and ~$4K yearly "maintenance" fees that the gold standard CNC CAM packages typically cost. Those programs are typically used in Fortune 500 companies manufacturing engineering groups such as those making custom products heading into the demanding aerospace market. could be better.

It's an alright book. I took this class with the person who wrote it. Pro. Goldenberg. At Queensborough Community College. He doesn't explain what to do, he expects us to know it this book provides examples of how to do things, but its not so clear on all steps, so you would have to figure it out on your own. Its a helpful book but the steps aren't 100% helpfull. I gave it 3 stars because.. well, find out for yourself, buy this book and you'll end up giving it 3 stars also.

The first book I got had a blank DVD in the back so I sent it back. The second book also had a blank DVD in the back. I already had a copy of mastercam x7 demo so I just kept the book. I emailed the publisher about getting a replacement DVD but got no response from them.

Sensible book about eating a plant-based diet

If you are deciding whether to eat a plant-based diet, there are plenty of choices for books to read. This book is a great choice. Several reasons--for one, this book avoids the preachiness of some books that advocate veganism for philosophical reasons. If you have that philosophy, I respect that. But I personally would rather read a factual book, with recipes, leaving the philosophy to my own personal journey of discovery. "My Beef with Meat" is really more about what works for health, according to the author's research into the subject. Rip Esselstyn opens the book with his argument that a plant-based diet has health benefits, and seeing more and more of my friends improve their health in this manner, and seeing that I only maintain my weight using mainly plant-based foods, there seems to be some truth in it.

So what's in this book? Chapters about the health benefits of plant-based diet, including why this diet may reverse arterial plaque, and of course, recipes for good-tasting food, new to this book and not in the previous "Firehouse" books. For example, there's quite a bit of pizza. Ok, so you don't eat wheat? What about polenta pizza? (corn based.) But there are also wheat doughs and toppings (no cheese, of course) using cashew cream, which I've had and can tell you tastes really good, or other creamy-feeling toppings such as guacamole, pesto, hummus or spinach artichoke dip. (Yes, not authentic Tomato Pie if you come from Philly but savory and good nonetheless.) There is also a variant on one of my top vegan faves of all times, Vegan Reuben, which uses tempeh (a bean cake that can be sliced and sauted and tastes savory) along with non-egg mayo/ketchup Russian dressing. The one thing missing is the sauteed onions I typically put on here, but who says you can't add those yourself.

There are hearty sandwiches and chili, solving the problem of eating a bag lunch or thermos lunch. The recipes are aimed for robust (masculine) tastes, per the Fireman theme of all Esselstyn's book. Big, strong, healthy and plant-based doesn't mean eating alfalfa sprouts daintily strewn on a kale chip.

A chapter in this book that won my heart was the important discussion of Vitamin B12, which is an essential element of diet and literally can prevent your brain from deteriorating. I'm harping on this subject, because not having enough vitamin B12 can affect memory, leading to memory loss. A severe deficiency in vitamin B12 can lead to severe memory loss. The Linus Pauling Institute states that chronic vitamin B12 deficiency may result in dementia, and I know of one situation, an acquaintance who suffered "pernicious anemia" which is the inability to absorb and process B12. It was not diagnosed in time, and she got dementia after noting a loss of her short-term memory. How sad and how preventable.

Esselstyn doesn't make false claims that you can get B12 direct from plant sources, which is NOT true (plant B12 is an analog, not the form we need. If someone tells you otherwise, it's the wishful thinking.*) Esselstyn DOES tell how animals make B12 in their tissues, and how we can get it without animal sourced food--from a tablet! And even better, he suggests having B12 levels measured. By the way, if you don't absorb enough from the tablets, you can try an injection (doctor) and there is also an oral spray, as B12 needs to be absorbed by the mucous membranes and not swallowed. Which is why the tablets are sublingual (dissolve under your tongue.)

There are many reasons I give this book a huge thumbs-up. This author supports his claims with data and practical suggestions, not wishful thinking or misty philosophy. He provides tasty recipes with hearty food that replicates "comfort food" with vegetable alternatives that give up none of the flavor.

There are 140 recipes that aren't in the previous Engine 2 Diet book. One warning; if you can't eat nuts, this can be problematic, as much of vegan cooking replaces milk and meat with nuts. Some recipes replace milk with soy, another issue if you have thyroid problems, some other conditions, or want to avoid GMO foods, but you can use rice or almond milk. That's the ONLY problem I have with vegan recipes in general. Soy and nuts are a problem for some folks, including me, so I am rather limited sometimes. And then there's the issue of gluten--reliance on wheat gluten protein (seitan) as a meat substitute can be a problem. So there are some recipes with seitan but they aren't the majority of the main dishes, so gluten-free folks can adapt with plenty of other great recipes that work well.

Summary: a lot to like in this book if you are investigating a plant-based diet. Good information, solid arguments, no preaching, good recipes.

UPDATE: I've found so many recipes in this book that I enjoy, that I think this is one of my favorite new cookbooks. In particular, there is a recipe for red quinoa with black beans and roasted corn that is a dinner salad/main dish that I particularly enjoy. The salads are very hearty and the soup chapter has a mulligatawny with red lentils that I also love. The recipes are low-fat as well. This absolutely blows away the notion that eating vegetable-based foods that are low fat will be bland and flavorless. If you want a good plant-based cookbook, I'd recommend this one.

*Note: Since some cultures are traditionally vegan, and didn't have access to vitamin tablets, the question is how did these people obtain B12 in the diet? Some writers on this subject proposed fermentation of foods, certain yeasts, algae and I suspect, were GUESSING rather than researching about B12 analogs--that is, molecules that look like B12 but are not active in the body like animal-sourced B12. It turns out the most likely source is insect infestation (small, tiny bugs like grain weevils) especially in less-developed parts of the world where food storage and processing would naturally lead to a certain level of insect protein in the food. Not so savory to consider, but recently the UN had been proposing insect consumption to boost protein in poor diets.

You'll be surprised at how many scientist friends you have

I'm a plant strong believer. Having lost 26 pounds in six weeks and off blood pressure medication. I've read quick read and I'll be trying the new recipes.
Here are some high lights from the book.

"[P]eople are waking up to the fact that our current paradigm is broken. [D]espite our attempts to medicate away our misery, Americans are sicker than ever. The answer is not another pill, procedure, or doctor, or more legislation. Unbelievably, the answer is right in front of our faces. But we've been blind because we had no idea the answer could be so simple. Plants can heal. Plants can nourish. Plants can give you everything you need to be the healthiest person you can be and live the life you deserve to live. The unfortunate reality is that the powerful meat and dairy lobbies have been successfully spreading their propaganda for many decades.

[The] widespread misconception about protein is that plant proteins are somehow not 'complete'. This is a fallacy, based on outdated research that was weak to begin with." The author that started this belief rescinded her position ten years later. "[It is known] plant proteins have a healthier composition and balance of essential amino acids, and elegantly balanced by nature in a way that inherently protects us from inflammation and tumor growth."

This is the best story from the book (because I've lived it too): Mike's Moderation. An email written to Rip after Mike achieved excellent results from a plant strong diet. Mike found out just how many "scientist" friends he had. "It's amazing, really. I never heard a word of concern when somebody saw me eat my fifth piece of pizza after polishing off a plate of wings and a few beers. However, one word that I'm holding off on the meat and lowering my fat intake, and they come out of the woodwork. They all seem to have kept their non-science office jobs, but suddenly they're evolutionary biologists talking about the shape of my teeth proving our omnivorous lineage, dietitians concerned about the exact percentage of my calories coming from protein, and biochemists who suddenly are worried about the details of my blood chemistry. My advice? Smile, thank them for the advice, and ignore them like they ignored you when you were eating crap that was killing you. The give them first dibs on your clothes before you take them to Goodwill because they are too big for you. If they get excited about how I'm harming myself now that I've engaged in that horror of horrors - eating fresh fruits and vegetables! I just tell them what they want to hear: It is very possible that this is just a fad diet that I'll stop doing sometime down the road, but if so, right now it is the most successful fad diet I've ever been on. So far, I've only seen positive effects from eating plant-strong. As soon as I see one single detrimental effect to my health, I'll reconsider my choice. I'll even give them the pleasure of buying me a steak."

A Kitchen Keeper for Your Nutrition & Cookbook Plant-Based Library

This new offering from Rip Esselstyn and Engine 2 is a winner. It is a Kitchen Keeper! My Beef With Meat packs a mega-load of extremely well researched recent nutritional information into 36 very short chapters that dispel many myths and misconceptions about nutrition and health. Rip has no political axe to grind, rather his entire focus is on presenting the latest scientific validated research and facts in an accessible manner to help the reader take charge of his/her own health. Despite its cheeky attitude, My Beef With Meat is definitely not another fad diet book, but an important book that will contribute much to health and palate. This is a book appropriate both for newbies and veterans of whole food plant-based diets. It's written for the American public: for those who are young, old, sick, healthy or just average meat-eating joes and janes. It is a terrific and informative introduction for those considering making a change to their diet to lose weight and improve their health as well as a valuable way for those who have embraced this diet-style to know what to say when friends and family inevitably lob questions and criticism in their direction. Even after nearly 2 years eating a whole food, plant-based "plant-strong" diet, and delving into the many excellent offerings in this field, I learned new information. Rip writes in a fun, engaging, non-threatening style with chapters covering such topics as "Animal Protein is Dead Wrong", "The Mediterranean Myth", "Plants Are Bone-Strong", "Plants Perk Up Your Pecker", "Oil is the New Snake Oil", "Carbs Are King!", "Eat Plants. Lose Weight. Feel Great", and "Be Done with Dumb Diets." I particularly appreciated the chapter on why eating plant-based is beneficial for high level athletes, "Plant-Strong: The Athlete's X-Factor".

Rip brings his own stellar credentials and first hand experiences as as a long-time plant eating firefighter and top professional athlete to the task as well as drawing on the research and expertise of many of the leaders in this field. Rip is a former fire-fighter who in his work detailed in his first book The Engine 2 Diet: The Texas Firefighter's 28-Day Save-Your-Life Plan that Lowers Cholesterol and Burns Away the Pounds spent more time responding to health-related medical emergencies brought on by obesity, heart disease, diabetes etc. than to fires. He is also a former top tier professional triathlete and experienced personally positive changes in his athletic performance when he shifted to a plant-based diet. They use whole plant foods with no added oils, or salt, a bare minimum of sweeteners. I can personally vouch for the quality and deliciousness of these recipes because I recently attended a Farms2Forks 3-day immersion weekend put on by Rip and the folks at Engine 2 and Forks Over Knives. The hosting Hyatt hotel served our group of over 300 guests abundant buffets that followed the criteria of this lifestyle and served quite a number of the recipes from My Beef With Meat--definitely a first for the chef and kitchen staff used to cooking up eggs, steaks, and pastries for business conferences. Instead we ate such things as Black Bean and Sweet Potato Quesadillas, Dr. Seuss Stacked Polenta, Kale Ceviche Salad served with OMG Walnut Sauce, and Damn Good Cookies for dessert. As you can tell, this book puts the fun back into eating. Rip's sister, Jane Esselstyn, who was in charge of this section of the book also demonstrated a number of the recipes during the weekend.

My Beef With Meat makes a great gift book for your friends, family, and work colleagues who want to take charge of their own health, or express genuine interest or skepticism in why you turn down hamburgers at the BBQ, eschew olive oil and ice cream in favor of a plain baked potato topped with veggies, fresh fruit and the Date Nut Chocolate Pie you made from this book and brought for dessert. After having spent a decade counting calories, points, and portion sizes with little permanent effect on my weight nor change in my underlying health, eating a whole food plant based diet for the last two years has opened up an entire world of delicious, nutritious, health-giving abundance. I've been able to throw those former constricting metrics out the window, lose 40 lbs. and stop numerous medications. Thanks to the very simple change of giving up all animal products and oil in favor of the style of eating advocated by Rip in My Beef With Meat and increasing numbers of scientists medical and nutritional experts (Yes! You can do it! I don't miss steak, cheese, ice cream, or doughnuts--my palate changed in about 28 days to prefer the taste of vegetables, fruits, whole starches and grains, and legumes), I now maintain a newly slim weight and vibrant health.     Nothing new

    I read the electronic version of this book in the library. In my opinion, it is nicely presented text, but I found no new information there. It you are familiar with the Guide to Naturalization by The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (available for free from WWW.USCIS.GOV in PDF format), you don't need this book. Questions and answers for Civic test are exactly the same, but in different order. Yes, examples in the book are different from those in the website, but still very obvious and straightforward.

    i will give this book five stars if only because of it's accuracy in detailing all information. HOWEVER, nobody should spend any more money than they already have (God knows how much money has been paid to get this far!) since ANY and ALL information written on this book can be found at the immigration website, [...]

    Practical and helpful advice for preparing the N-400 form and dealing with the process

    We're preparing to apply for citizenship and I'd read this book after having filled out the forms. I fully expected to have to prepare a draft version of our application, review and revise it as needed. I worried that I would spend too much time reviewing and revising -- weeks or months -- out of fear of making a mistake.

    I found Ilona Bray's straightforward description of the process and pitfalls helpful particularly because she offers a practitioner's practical advice. I've read other reviewers mention that you can get the same advice elsewhere, but since my own sources were limited to the instructions on how to fill out the N-400 form and Ilona Bray's book, I was relieved to find the information organized and readily available in an easy to find format.

    As we opted not to hire an attorney to review our application, I wanted more than the government website and instructions to help guide me through the application and waiting process.

    If you have possible issues with your application, you'll need to discuss the specifics with an attorney. But if you meet all the requirements and just want to make sure that your application is filed completely and that the process goes smoothly, Becoming a U.S. Citizen is worth reading, keeping on hand, and referring to throughout the process. I found several tips and suggestions that have helped me in preparing my N-400 application. The tips are the sort that an immigration law practitioner might give you but fortunately without spending several thousands on an immigration lawyer.
