With Old Yeller, Fred Gipson secured his place as one of the finest novelists in America. A MUST FOR YOUNG READERS!

I'm a 7th grade teacher and I introduced my students to this novel for the first time this year. To my amazement they had never even heard of OLD YELLER. Now, middle school students can be the toughest audience in the world but THEY LOVED THIS BOOK.
Author Fred Gipson perfectly captures the time period of Texas in the late 1800's and the challenges of daily life. Into the mix of chores and adventures on the farm is the universal bond of a boy and his dog. Travis and Old Yeller are two characters that any child will immediately connect with and grow to love. And naturally as many novels geared towards younger readers, the conclusion will remain with them long after the novel has been read.
On a side note I must also recommend the classic Walt Disney version of OLD YELLER (VHS or DVD). Young readers will enjoy the similarities and differences between novel and movie. It's an excellent example to build discussion or writing lessons involving comparisons or contrasts.
And while I have continually mentioned young readers I should also comment that OLD YELLER is a must-read for people of any age group. So the next time you need to be entertained by a great novel, pick up this classic.

A good book; A sad, but good book

This heart-warming book is about Old Yeller, (Which mean 'Yellow' in those days) a stray golden-brown dog which Travis' little brother (Little Arliss)finds. Travis hates the dog, who they named 'Old Yeller', until Old Yeller saves Travis' life. Soon they are best buddies, but the fate that is awaiting at the end brings them apart. This book is perfect for ages 7 and up, and is a terrific day-to-day read. This has 16 exciting chapters for either read aloud or silent reading. If your lookin' for a book to read, It's Old Yeller.

Old Yeller is the beautiful, touching story of a boy and his big "yeller" dog.

When Travis's father goes on a cattle drive, Travis takes over the farm. He takes on a big task and is furious to find a big, one-eared, yellow dog eats thier meat, plays in their drinking water, and runs away when his family is in dire need of help. But Old Yeller proves himself when he saves Travis's litttle brother, Arliss, from a mad mother bear.

I loved reading Old Yeller because the story became real. I love dogs and it was amazing how detailed the story was. It was touching to read about how close Travis and Old Yeller were brought together.

Old Yeller is a classic novel everyone can read. Fred Gipson tells about the love and loyalty the characters possess for one another. I highly recommend this touching story that filled me with emotion and made my day forever.

i was really inspired to pick this book up after reading What the Buddha Taught by Walpola Rahula. And appropriately titled The Heritage of the Bhikku, it is really just a chronological history of the Bhikkhu.... informative but not an exciting read.

Westerners in particular will have their eyes and minds opened by this wonderful little book. WE bring our Western attitudes and assumptions to Buddhism and in so many ways, we are just wrong--for example, that Buddhism ignores social responsibility to the poor or disenfranchised.

A well planned text

I am a Grad. student taking a Neural Basis of Comm. class. It's been over 5 years since I've had the prerequisite neuroanatomy class so I've been a little worried about being able to review and catch up. I'm glad I bought this book. This book has really great graphic aids which helps me understand concepts better. Just last night I was reading a description that wasn't making sense to me and then when I saw the diagram on the next page I was able to understand it. The writing in this book is precise and doesn't bog the reader down with so much detail that the concept is totally lost. It's not easy reading, but it doesn't put me to sleep almost immediately like some other speech anatomy textbooks have. Even if it's not your asssigned textbook, if you have to take a neuroscience/neuroanatomy class I'd reccomend this book as a good resource.

Good book, but no page numbers

This book does what it is supposed to. It's a great source and an easy enough read considering the content. A bit dry at times but otherwise efficient. My only problem is that this kindle addition does not include page numbers that coincide with the actual book. In my Neuro class the teacher assigned specific page numbers and sections to cover the things she really wanted to focus on. This was an extremely difficult obstacle to overcome as I am taking classes online and the teacher couldn't simply show me which pages she was referring to and since the kindle addition doesn't have page numbers available. I am really disappointed that a text book would be missing this essential feature.

This textbook is really a huge help in my course on neuroscience and communication disorders. It is well written and the author gives credit to the other professors who put their expertise in the book as well. I like how there are terms at the end of each chapter

Engineering Intersects Design

As an engineer in other media (software) who enjoys civil engineering and architecture done well, this book entertained and inspired me as few others in the last five years. Peter Rice appears to enjoy a risk, a change, a challenge. He listens to the materials to find solutions to problems, creating the practical engineering resolution to an abstract design. The newest tools, materials, techniques, talents are marshalled into the cause. But so is a spark of inspiration, an angle of attack.
The interaction of these words - risk, change, challenge, materials, engineering, design, problems, solutions - is described in a mostly auto-biographical tale. Each chapter centers on a project or two in which Rice was involved. Particularly fun was how working with the different people and cultures sometimes added to the challenge, and the result.
There is little doubt in my mind that any creative, design-centered profession can draw inspiration from this book.

Humane and inventive...

The austerity of the title and prose only bolster Rice's deserved recognition as a genius of our time. Rice looks back on his past projects and recounts them with a very unique combination of sensitivity and logic. A degree of sadness overcomes you when reading his remarkably sincere narrations, knowing that he wrote this in the final throes of his life.

If you have the funds to actually purchase this book, you won't regret it.

Peter Rice was a genius behind modern landmarks like the Sydney Opera, the Centre Pompidou, and Lloyd's Bank in London. This british structural engineer gave our world a mighty heave to the future. He humbly sings throughout this book to his love of his work, to the greatness of human mind, and to the evolution of our understanding of materials and tools.

An interesting and important perspective on the modern American debate surrounding vaccination.

In Vaccine: The Debate in Modern America, Largent couples historical scholarship, keen cultural observations, and personal experiences in order to explore the American debate surrounding vaccination. Largent's engaging, provocative and compelling argument suggests that the debate about the science, safety and efficacy of vaccination is a proxy for a set of unaddressed underlying anxieties regarding vaccines; therefore, science is not enough to resolve it. The book sets out to explore these anxieties and understand where and how they originated. Largent's insightful observations provide ways in which the debate can be moved forward by addressing the anxieties parents have directly. Largent argues that by ignoring the underlying anxieties public health officials and vaccine advocates have misconstrued the reasons parents chose not to vaccinate or delay vaccination. Secondly, public health officials prefer to discuss the efficacy, and safety of vaccines because this is within their professional realm. Vaccine advocates often claim that ignorance is one of the reasons parents are anxious about vaccinating their children. They claim that this refusal to vaccinate is predicated by an ignorance of the severity of the diseases for which vaccines protect. Whereas, data demonstrates that the more educated parents are the more likely they are to have reservations about the recommended vaccine schedule. One of the most important observations made by Largent is that not all vaccines are the same thus recognizing that not all vaccines are equal could sooth the rhetoric of the debate and allow for a more fruitful discussion. Otherwise, parents who are anxious about the amount of vaccines or one specific vaccine may be pushed not to vaccinate at all. Failing to recognize the differences between different inoculations results in an all or nothing approach.L argent recognizes and emphasizes (throughout the book) that there is no evidence linking vaccines to autism or other ailments. About the Author
Jean-Noel Kapferer is a worldwide thought leader and expert on brand management. His latest best-setting book The New Strategic Brand Management (also published by Kogan Page) is the key reference work for top-level international MBAs. Professor at HEC Paris, the luxury research centre in Europe, he holds the Pernod-Ricard Chair on Prestige and Luxury Management. Also a consultant, he is a member of the board of major brands, and regularly gives executive seminars on luxury in the United States, China, Japan, Korea and India. He holds a PhD from Northwestern University (USA).

Vincent Bastien is one of the most experienced senior managers in the luxury business. For over 25 years, he has been CEO or MD of international companies, both in luxury including six years as MD of Louis Vuitton Malletier and three years as MD of the beauty division of Sanofi group (including Yves Saint Laurent, Nina Ricci, Yves Rocher, and Parfums Oscar de la Renta, Van Cleef & Arpels and Fendi) and in business-to-business industries (glass, printing). During the same period, he managed his own company in ready-to-wear clothing. He is now Affiliate Professor at HEC Paris, where he teaches Strategy in Luxury.

The best book on Luxury Strategy

This is a unique book and very interesting for people involved in understanding the current and future luxury industry characteristics. It discusses the main issues and principles of luxury management, it is very clear and it mentions many practical cases from this industry. It clarifies the borders of real luxury, it is a perfect guide for entrepreneurs and managers which want to succeed in luxury branding. I suggest to read this book because it is different from the others and it is written by two internationally recognized experts in this field.

A thorough examination of the rules of luxury

I'm convinced; if a brand fully commits to the points made in this book, it will achieve wild success. The only catch; everyone will compromise in their execution of a luxury strategy, and that is the one thing a brand can not do if it truly wants to be a luxury brand.

The essential point of the book. Operate your brand like it's a religion. Seriously, luxury is consumption raised to the level of religion.

My only knock; it can read like a college-text, and some of the author's points are repeated to excess.

A book necessary to read on Luxury

As a professional on Luxury and Licensing, I have really appreciated this book nice to read and, in particular, its normative speech that sets it apart from other books on the same subject: not only a description of what's done but also what should be done and what should not be done.
As an example, I think it is a useful reading if you want to know "when, how and why leave the luxury sector"! To enter the luxury market or to get out of it are corporate strategies that need to be clearly decided before implementation.
