Wow! Kaboom!

OK, I'll admit, when I first picked up the book I wasn't expecting something exceptional, expecting to have "Sub A Vs. Sub B, US Sub sinks Russian sub, sails victoriously into port, and that's that." This book had a nuclear-tipped battle that went far, far, beyond the average sub thriller (I would love to go into specifics, but then I'd spoil the many unexpected and awesome plot twists :-). The descriptions, being from a former SSN officer, are very vivid and realistic, their level of detail rivaling Tom Clancy himself. I also liked that along with the extensive descriptions of things often down the subatomic (which I enjoyed greatly), there was also a deeply personal story that is not neglected or forgotten in the book. Unlike some novels, you don't feel that you're reading the book as much as it feels as though you're being pulled along by the novel, and you sit back and enjoy the powerful ride! One thing this novel reminded me was of a Dale Brown novel (except underwater!) in that it had a fictional super-weapon based on current and theoretical capabilities, and is used in the most action-packed manner possible. Sure, as was discussed there's the "problems" with the name of the 637-class sub, the Mk-49s and Mk-50s, etc., but as the author has pointed out that was just artistic license so I didn't have any problem with that. The best sub thriller I've seen in a long, long time. I've been hooked on DiMercurio novels! READ "VOYAGE OF THE DEVIFILSH"!!!

STUNNING debut by newest member of techno-club

When I first read 'The Hunt For Red October' I was hopelessly attracted to Submarine novels. Unfortunately Clancy didn't write any more of them. So I began to search for the heir to the 'sub crown' of moderan naval fiction. I tried 'Kilo Class' and found it was okay, but not what I was looking for. I then found Mark Joseph who has written two exceptional submarine novels ('To Kill The Potemkin' & 'Typhoon') and patiently waited for his 3rd...but it never arrived. Out of pure luck I discovered Michael DiMercurio and picked up 'Voyage of the Devilfish' and THAT is when I discoverd the heir to Clancy's (sub) throne.
I have YET to be disappointed with ANY of the books by this author. You COULD read them all in whatever order you choose because they stand alone, but I recommend you read them in order because he just keeps getting better. The main reason why these books are so realisitic is because of DiMercurio's experience as an honest-to-goodness submariner. With that said, if you enjoyed 'Red October' than you will NOT be disappointed with this guy. His descriptions are first rate, and in some cases, a few sound a little far-fetched, but when I asked a friend of mine who had served on the USS Bluefish how realistic they were, all he said was, "Maybe, maybe not". He just wouldn't elaborate. Kudos to DiMercurio's debut effort, and his subsequent follow-up's are very much worth reading. If you count yourself a fan of this particular genre (underwater submarine techno-thriller) this guy IS the reigning king in fictional print today. No joke. DiMercurio is the real deal.

I'd recommend this book to anyone! A great miltary thriller!

I'll admit -- when I first saw the book I have no idea who Micheal Dimercurio was. The only thing that drew my attention was my love for military-type thrillers. I fully expected to end up saying, "Yeah.... OK. Nice Book. But Tom Clancy still kicks butt." Well.... after reading the book. I couldn't wait for the next to come out. A serious Tom Clancy rival. If you like military-type thrillers (especially when it involves the Navy), You'll love this book.
Basically, Michael Pacino, the main character, is a hot-shot submarine commander with the Navy in his blood. His father was a sub commander who died "on patrol" in the '70s -- his father's best friend happens to be Pacino's godfather & commanding officer.
When the "whole god-damn Russian Atlantic fleet" goes to sea, Pacino is sent to investigate and "it just so happens" that the Russian sub commander that he goes up against is the same one who is believed to have sunk Pacino's father in the 70s. As you can imagine, this makes Micheal Pacino all the more determined in his task. There are several parts where you will not be able to put the book down -- even for a minute.
There are a few things where it's "a bit of a stretch of the imagination" but very, very few. It's a very good book & I'd recommend it -- along with the rest of Micheal Dimercurio's books to anyone.

About the Author
Ann Thompson is Professor of English Language and Literature and Head of the School of Humanities at King's College London. She has edited The Taming of the Shrew, and her other publications include Shakespeare's Chaucer, Shakespeare, Meaning and Metaphor (with John O. Thompson), and Women Reading Shakespeare, 1660-1900 (with Sasha Roberts). She has also published widely on editing Shakespeare and Shakespeare's language. She is one of the general editors of the Arden Shakespeare.

Neil Taylor is Dean of Research and Dean of the Graduate School at Roehampton University. He has edited Henry IV, Part 2 and (with Brian Loughrey) Thomas Middleton: Five Plays. He has also published widely on editing Shakespeare, Shakespeare on film, and other aspects of Renaissance and modern drama.

Middle aged and finally able to read Shakespeare

I cannot more highly recommend this particular book, No Fear Shakespeare's Hamlet.

I am approaching 50 years old and my only real experience trying to read Shakespeare was in high school where we were assigned roles in class and made to read, without comprehension, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Cesar. In the interim, I tried watching a few plays and dragged my kids to see the play Taming of the Shrew, which they hated because they couldn't understand the language nor the plot. Rather than becoming a Shakespeare hater, I've always felt inadequate and dumb for this huge hole in my education.

My current inspiration to try Shakespeare again was my desire to try and help my high school aged son become more educated and cultured than I have been.

I tried first with the Folger annotated editions of Shakespeare. They look excellent and define the unfamiliar words, but I still could not make sense of a substantial portion of the dialogue. I guess maybe I'm just dumb, I don't know.

Anyway, I saw good reviews about this No Fear series, and I ordered several. So far I have read the modern English translations of Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and The Tempest. While I feel a bit like I'm 'cheating', I actually have really enjoyed all the plays and at least now I know the plots and the characters and even some of the more subtle themes. I can't answer the complaints that the translations don't adequately translate Shakespeare's meanings. There are a few side notes that point out double meanings and things like that, though there are not extensive footnotes or sidenotes.

To answer those who rate these books one or two stars, my answer is that they are at least a door into the world of Shakespeare for those of us unable to navigate the originals on our own. And they only take a couple of hours to read. It's not like this is a lifetime commitment or anything. The book only costs five bucks, so why not invest a couple of hours and read it? And, for me, I liked the plays so much that I AM now going to dig out the Folger editions and read the originals, with the No Fear books available in case I get in trouble. These modalities of trying to appreciate Shakespeare are not mutually exclusive.

Well, hopefully that's helpful to someone. I wanted to write this so that people would know that these books are not just for lazy students hoping to avoid reading the originals or somehow 'cheat' in their English classes. I'm not a Shakespeare scholar or teacher and never will be, just an ordinary guy, but for me, these books were the window of opportunity that I had been searching for. Two thumbs up, most definitely.

Best Shakespeare Edition Available: Arden

The Arden editions of Shakespeare are the best available. While they cost a lot more than the standard cheap editions, they have so much more. The Folger editions (probably the most widely available editions of Shakespeare) have footnotes that are quite general and never do they have enough. In addition, they really don't have that much extra information on the play--only a small essay analyzing the modern issues of the play. The Arden editions are truly the scholarly editions of Shakespeare. Ninety percent of the time that I have a question on the text, a footnote provides more information. In addition, a lengthy introduction is included. Everything is documented. While at this point I don't care that much about how the quarto version of Hamlet said "no", when the folio version said "so", it's nice to know that if I have a specific question, the answers in there. My thoughts on Hamlet: Don't fret about understanding the material, just dive in. Shakespeare offers interesting plots to the beginners and vivid prose to pick over to the advanced scholar.

Hamlet: A Fresh Look at the Danish Prince

The folks at Arden decided to bring forth all three versions of Shakespeare's revenge (or anti-revenge) tragedy so that those who care can study the similarities and differences between the texts for themselves. I teach many Shakespearean plays and using the "bad quarto" of 1603 in conjunction with the oft used conflated text is an eye-opener for students who get a chance to truly engage in the text when comparing, say, Hamlet's third act soliloquy of the Folio (1623) version with the often maligned 1603 version. As usual, the people at Arden do an excellent job at editing the works. This is an excellent companion piece to the recently released third edition of Hamlet by the same editors of the 1604 Quarto text. A welcome addition to any Bardolators library.

They define a symbol as "something that a particular culture considers to mean something else." Each entry features a blue line drawing of the symbol in a generalized pictographic style. Although the quantity of images could have been overwhelming, the symbols are extremely well organized into numbered columns that correspond with the alphabetical front index, or "symbol finder." This index is invaluable because the text itself is composed of eight thematic chapters, among them "Heaven and Earth," "Characters and People," and "Objects and Artifacts." Pertinent cultural meanings for the symbols are refreshingly worldwide, covering Africa, Europe, the Middle East, the Far East, the Americas, and the Pacific. Many of the connotations are religious in nature, with referrences ranging from Aztec beliefs to Mesopotamian mythology to major contemporary religions. The editors encourage readers to "dip" into the book and then follow the threads of capitalized cross references. After doing so, one will never think the same way again about eyes, rabbits, roses, swastikas, the color white, and 995 other things. About the Author
Rupert Shepherd is a freelance writer specialising in art history. Since graduating from the Courtauld Institute he has written two books on Renaissance art, and is currently working on a book about the history of the Palace of Westminster. Rowena Shepherd is an art historian currently working for English Heritage. Rachel Kennedy is a curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum. She specializes in the art of the 18th century, and has contributed entries on the symbolism of art to a number of dictionaries and encyclopaedias.

Complete Guide to Symbols and Their Meaning

"1000 Symbols" is an extensive compendium of symbols from around the world. What makes this book unique from other books on symbols is the worldwide approach. A specific symbol can mean widely differing things in different cultural contexts and the authors do a wonderful job of examining each interpretation. Each symbol has a number that is cross-referenced to the index at the beginning of the book making them easy to find. In addition, the symbols are categorized into eight general categories for easy browsing. The categories are Heaven and Earth, Characters and People, Body and Actions, Living Creatures, Mythical Beasts, Flowers, Plants and Trees, Objects and Artefacts, and Abstracts. Each of these categories is also subdivided.
Each of the symbols discussed has a line drawing of the symbol along with a detailed description of what the symbol meant to different groups, how it is used today, various ways it was drawn, etc. If you want to know about the various symbols that surround us this is an excellent place to find out. A highly recommended reference for anyone interested in symbols.

I am sorry to report of my disapointment with this title. While it does contain some interesting research, the symbols illustrated are all modernized graphics. The use of traditional and historic depictions of the symbols would have made this work much more readable.

As a graduate student, I had this book for a graduate course in Matrix Theory, taught by Dr. Hans Schneider at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I've always liked it. Now that I'm planning my own course in Matrix Theory, I've been searching for just the right book for the type of course I want, which is an intro graduate level course for working engineers. I have tried, but cannot find, and don't really need, anything other than this book.

What I consider "The Great general books on Linear Algebra" (this book, the Horn/Johnson ones, and the "evergreen" Gantmacher) each have a different point of view on this subject. I learned my first advanced Matrix theory on this book, and the "space transformation" oriented approach here displayed is essential for geometry oriented minds. (yes...unfortunately this book is still a bit expensive... )

After practising and teaching in Canada, he returned to Australia, where he was a member of the Royal Institute of Architects New South Wales Chapter Council (1970-72), and an Architectural Juror for the Australian Archives National Building (1979) and the Australian Parliament House Competition (1979-80). He was a Board Member of the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council (1977-81) and Chairman of the Architecture and Design Panel of the Australia Council. He is the recipient of many awards from Australia, Canada and the United States, including the Royal Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medal in 1980. Jennifer Taylor is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Sidney. She began her architectural education in England, and graduated as Master of Architecture from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1969. She has travelled extensively, and her writings on contemporary architecture in Australia, Japan and the Netherlands have appeared in various architectural journals throughout the world.
