Loved it (except for the small print) so much I bought two more books by this team. It covers Designers A-Z, and features a Timeline) I use the book for reference. Its s a great for memory jogging--oh yeah I remember that chair! Such a reasonable price the book is worth buying just for the nostalgia. So many more out there with less information and a lot more money.

Writing Style Indicative of Author's Heritage

To understand the book and many of the reviews here, one has to consider the author. Valentine Penrose was active in the Surrealist art movement and published many surrealist poems. Radcliffe and the Marquis de Sade were great influences on her writing. This book is more than a historical tale; her love of gothic prose and words is as much a character in the book as the countess. Penrose's telling of the Bloody Countess's story stands out from those of other historians because Penrose is one of the only writers to tell the story without either an overt or covert Christian interpretation of the events. So, if you want just facts without wading through lots of writing, chose another text. If you are interested in surrealist writing or want a more avant-garde look at the Countess, read Penrose's.

The content is good, if not the way it is presented

There's alot of fuss being made about this book. I don't particularly see anything wrong with the prose style, except that it becomes a little heavy handed in some places. The fact of the matter is that this is the only freely available work on Erzebet Bathory, and as such it is superb. I thought it highly interesting, although it could have been structured better.

Utter Nonsense

What would happen if Danielle Steel tried to be Oswald Spengler? The result would be something very similar to "The Bloody Countess" - an often incomprehensible account of historical events related in prose so flowery it stands to cause migraines. Penrose's work is a garbled mess of self-consciously mysterious language; hopelessly bogged down with high-flown speech, the story of Countess Bathory becomes lost in all the Kafkaesque prattle. She moves randomly from one topic to the next, following no logical thought patterns, often obscuring her points in meaningless, poetic drivel. I read this book seeking factual information on the history of Elizabeth Bathory and came out sorely disappointed; to call it unreadable would be a kindness.

really cool, but too hard

I bought this sheet music a few years back (because I could play the piano, and I LOVED the movie), but I found that it was WAY too advanced for my level. I still liked to pretend that I could play it and finger though the easiest songs (like sally's song). but more recently I pulled it out and decided I would try it again...I thought I improved a little, but it was still SO hard! Then one day I decided I was going to play the entire song of "This is Halloween." So I sat down and began to play...20 minute later I was so frustrated that I had to stop halfway through. Every note in the piece has a different sharp or flat than the one before it, I'm NOT joking. Even though this music is very hard to play (for me, anyway) I gave it 5 stars because I have heard it played by someone who COULD play it, and it was amazing! Even if you're not a master at the piano, I would still recomend it, if only because the music is so great, but it really is hard to play

Good song book with guitar chords

There's lot of stuff in this tiny cheap book. It's obviously not aimed at orchestrators but more at the movie fans who expect some nice evenings, singing these excellent tunes.

I give this book a 5 because of the guitar chords which are systematically drawn each time they occur. It wasn't expected, especially as we're dealing with a piano vocal song book, so: 2 thumbs up=5 stars !

absolutely amazing

I love all things tim burton, especially the soundtracks to his movies. danny elfman is possibly the most talented composer in hollywood and it baffles me that not all his music is sold as a piano vocal series, since it is so very suitable for just that. consequently I was thrilled to find this little book, and I was not disappointed. it is simple enough for a novice to play along based on the chords, and yet sophisticated enough for the more experienced pianist to get a lot out of the instrument. as has been noted elsewhere, the guitar chords are indeed systematically drawn every tim they occur, which to me is a fantastic idea. every tim burton/danny elfman fan who likes singing and playing the piano should own a copy of this!

the second I got my hands on it, I went directly to my piano and did not get up for the next four hours. that's how great it is to be your very own nightmare before christmas soundtrack!

Practical Guide to Appreciating Others

This book is a quick read that explains how different people like to receive appreciation in different ways. For you hard-nosed numbers-crunchers out there, the authors do a good job making a business case for showing appreciation at work. The book is a good balance between head and heart. You need to show appreciation only when you really mean it, but you also need to intentionally focus your behavior toward others in a way that will make them feel appreciated. [And the type of appreciation you like may be very different from what your coworker likes.]

The book comes with a link and password to a web-based survey to help you identify your own languages, so you can share with others what sort of appreciation is most meaningful to you. But the most valuable use for the survey will be in giving it to others, so you can find out how to most effectively show appreciate toward them.

I work in corporate training and development, and there is no shortage of assessments that people use for trying to understand others. Each of these has its own strengths, but most of them require a fairly intense amount of study and practice to be of practical value. The value in the 5 Languages approach is that it is intuitive, easy to remember, and easy to act upon.

Appreciation versus performance reviews

Really enjoyed the book. I came from a large retailer where our focus was on performance reviews and everyone turned it on at the mid-year point and at the end of the year. What was missing was appreciation and encouragement and that's where this book spoke to me. It's amazing what can happen to people when you offer them a little appreciation especially in their own language.
I'm familiar with the original book but didn't really see the connection to the corporate world until I read this book. There are some great examples and action items on what you can do for each language.
Our approach was to do the "blanket" approach and assume that everyone would "love" the gift or the annual luncheon. It was interesting - there were some people who would give away their gift or not show up for the lunch, and later you would hear them complain about these approaches. This book made me think - what would happen to our company if we learned to appreciate people in the language that speaks to them most.

Must read for employers

The latest in Gary Chapman's best selling series about how to best express love to individuals in one's life, The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace changes gears a bit and helps one show appreciation in a setting where the word love may be misinterpreted or not be appropriate.

For this edition, Chapman paired with workplace psychologist Dr. Paul White to discuss ways appreciation can be shown in the workplace, as well as the effect appropriately directed and received encouragement has on workers individually and the workplace as a whole. Chapman and White discuss the various ways appreciation is shown and the importance of encouraging someone in a way that is meaningful to him/her. The five love languages are quality time, acts of service, words of affirmation, tangible gifts, and physical touch. Within these five languages, there are various dialects, or specific ways that are more meaningful depending on the person. For example, one worker may feel the most appreciated when receiving a private not of encouragement, while another may be more encouraged by a public word of affirmation.

Chapman and White are thorough in their treatment of each language of appreciation and how it can be expressed in the workplace.They give many helpful examples from the variety of field tests they've done with numerous companies throughout the nation, of varying sizes, services offered, and structures. The end of each chapter includes several questions under "Making it Personal" that help the reader apply the contents of each chapter to his/her life. There is also an "Appreciation Toolkit" in the back with helpful appendices on topics such as "How to Reward Volunteers" and "Acknowledging and Dealing with the 'Weirdness Factor'".

Overall I would strongly encourage any person in leadership over others in the workplace to read this book. The effects of positive and appropriate affirmation in the workplace cannot be overemphasized. Anyone from the CEO to the low man on the totem pole who simply wants to encourage those around him will benefit from reading Chapman and White's The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace.

About the Author
Patrick Alain is an internationally known developer of some of the best-selling video games, including such titles as the multi-awarded blockbusters Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. The Leader Phrase Book was born out of Twitter and has quickly amassed a large following. Patrick was born in Paris, France, and has lived in a number of countries throughout his life. Fluent in five languages, he attributes much of his success to his ability to be a vital participant in large, multilingual teams. Patrick holds a master's degree from the University of Paris, and has lived in San Diego, California, since 2004.

Big waste of money

Working as a Trainer/Coach for a big, multinational corporation, I purchased "The Leader Phrase Book" in the hope that I could use it to support my colleagues who are aspiring leaders. Unfortunately I have been disappointed by most of what I read.

A powerful person, a leader, is never rude, because rudeness shows weakness. A leader is supposed to be a role model and a role model needs to have excellent communication skills and show exemplary behavior.

Someone who felt compelled to say "You better shut your mouth before you put your foot in it" (p.26), "Did someone forget their ADD meds" (p.52), "No wonder you don't have any friends" (p.83), "Kiss my ass" (p.85) etc. is acting in a childish, bullying manner and is not the type of person that I could respect or would look up to. Furthermore, "Don't get your knickers in a twist" (p.143) is downright sexist. If anyone I know used half the phrases in this book, I would consider them aggressive, insecure and ridiculous.

The title of the book is misleading, most of these phrases having nothing to do with leadership. I think that "The Smart-Ass Phrase Book" would be a more accurate title.

Laundry list, ethics needed

This book.was a complete disappointment. Basically, it was a list of language to use in certain situations. The author included sarcasm (not a great strategy for 21st century leaders) and idioms (again, not great) He also included Machiavellian techniques and offered ways to make someone look like a fool. this is not the type of leader I want to be!!

I love the different ways to say the same thing. I am told i come off strong so these help me find a softer way to say things. I d wish there was a best practice included. Besides memorization i don't know how else to replace my lingo with this one.

The Night Before Christmas, Ruth Sanderson Illustrator

I purchased the hardcover edition for my 2 year old daughter. The Illustrations are absoulutely beautiful. The only problem I have with it is that it is not the original poem by Moore. It has been censored, yes, censored. The 2 lines "The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath." have been removed! I understand that smoking is no longer a "PC" thing in this day and age, but when you are purchasing a classic poem, one you remember from your childhood, you expect to get the actual poem. I was disappointed that this fact had not been noted in the product description. I guess it's a little 1984ish to me, to start censoring a book and not inform the consumer.

This is a wonderful version of The Night Before Christmas. Contrary to the other review, I was SO GLAD he is smoking a pipe in the book - this is a classic poem and I don't like the versions that take out the verse about the pipe to be politically correct. The ilustration is wonderful and I would recommend this book to anyone.

This is the older version of The Night Before Christmas. It has the neat pictures in it that I remember when I was small and I am nearly 70 years old. It will be good to read to my great grandchildren.

Not a book. Completely useless.

This is not a book. A book is reviewed, edited, checked for mistakes, etc. This is a collection of copy / pasted garbage from the internet. Entire paragraphs are repeated and huge sections of the book are gigantic useless tables. This is clearly someone's very successful money making scheme, where they put zero effort into the product and a huge amount of effort into fake amazon reviews. No one who has opened this book could give it more than 1 star.

I am an experienced programmer in other programming languages and a programming teacher. This book is not suitable for anyone in any walk of life.

Horrible writing.

You can tell the writer is not actually a writer by reading this book for 5 minutes. Which is OK, because I'm not trying to read a story, I'm trying to learn.

But man, it's really difficult understanding poorly edited broken English at certain points.

"We can say all famous languages about more than 100. By using this feature it is easy to adapt to different languages. Earlier in the feature phones English is to be the only language in the mobile devices".

Poorly written....

I was looking forward to reading this book but ended up being disappointed. The book is very poorly written and Oz Swift should return to school and pay better attention in a remedial English class. Might want to look into an outside proof reader, not a close relative or the computer. Other than that, I have no opinions.

About the Author

ASWATH DAMODARAN is Professor of Finance at New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business. He has been the recipient of numerous awards for outstanding teaching, including the NYU university-wide Distinguished Teaching Award, and was named one of the nation's top business school teachers by BusinessWeek in 1994. In addition, Damodaran teaches training courses in corporate finance and valuation at many leading investment banks. His publications include Damodaran on Valuation: Security Analysis for Investment and Corporate Finance; Investment Valuation; Corporate Finance; Investment Management; and Applied Corporate Finance, all published by Wiley, and The Dark Side of Valuation.

Excellent book with too many typos

I have just read this book from cover to cover and benefited from it greatly. The author has a very methodical approach to valuation and demonstrates the application of principles through many examples. The closest competitor is the book Valuation by McKinsey, and with this latest revision of his text, Damodaran has I believe reclaimed the lead. It is human nature to want clear easy answers, but quite often in financial forecasting and valuation there are multiple options, each with tradeoffs and judgment calls. Damodaran often lays out the choices, discusses the pros and cons, and leaves it to the reader to decide among the alternatives. He does provide many applied examples, so the reader can see these sorts of judgment calls being repeatedly made and put into practice. The author's website at NYU provides a wealth of market and financial information, and he periodically updates this data. This is enormously useful if you are going to teach a class from this book, which I am planning to do.

The author follows common academic practice (following Modigliani and Miller) of discounting interest tax shields at the cost of debt rather than the unlevered cost of capital. It seems much of the industry treats these cash flows as riskier and uses the unlevered cost of capital for discounting. This approach is also consistent with a constant-growth capital structure, which is often assumed in modeling the firm's future cash flows. The McKinsey book takes this approach as do I in teaching Advanced Corporate Finance. But this is a minor complaint.

My chief complaint with the book is that it is replete with typos. Many of them are grammatical in nature (article missing, verb tense is wrong, sentence fragment) and, while irritating, are rather harmless. Others, however, involve equations or numbers and serve to impede or derail the reader's understanding. For example, in one chapter alone (Chapter 7), there are errors in equations on pages 158, 169, and 176. As a professor, I (usually) have the ability to recognize these sorts of errors, but students likely will not. For this reason, I am only giving four stars to what otherwise should be a five-star book.

This is a solid valuation text. It was a bit dry- perhaps that is just the subject matter. A worthwhile read nonetheless.

Damodaran does it again. Great book to understand the just in investment valuation. If you don't have any experience in financial valuation this gives you a comprehensive understanding of what investment professionals are doing in the field. Good book to have.
