This is one of the rare books on magic written in a concise manner rather than with intentional vagueness or a cryptic tone. I imagine this is due, in part, to Roderick's theory that the darker side of the psyche should be explored rather than hidden. With plenty of documentation and references to back up his work, Roderick fuses ideas from witchcraft with Jungian psychology to show how embracing the dark aspects of oneself leads to spiritual enlightenment.

An excellent book for people of advanced spirituality.

This is an excellent book for the person who has moved beyond the "fluffy-bunny" aspects of current alternative spiritualities like Wicca and neopaganism. From the first page, the reader is asked to challenge her basic perceptions that "dark" means "bad". The author contends, quite rightly, that until we embrace the "shadow-masks" within, we cannot be complete human beings. Tapping the archetypes of the "sage" and the "crone" for inspiration, the author uses a wide variety of journaling exercises, guided meditation and artistic projects to get the reader to open her spirituality to the untapped power that we bury.
My only quarrel with this book is that it should come with a tape of the meditations already prepared. This seems to be a common problem in the alternative spirituality publishing industry. The tapes could be marketed separately or it could all be offered as a package. I highly recommend this book to anyone who recognizes that they _have_ a dark side and want to get to know and understand how to use it.

Refreshingly intelligent

When I first saw this book on the shelf, my first thoughts were, "Oh no, another book about casting dark and evil spells". However, upon flipping through it, I found it to be quite a different story. Upon taking it home and actually reading it, I found it to be a wonderfully different outlook on magic and the psyche.
While Timothy Roderick does follow Wiccan principles such as the Rede ("Harm none"), this is a far cry from the usual light-and-faerie-dust fare of many Wicca books out these days. He uses Jungian archetypes, psychology, and historical mythology (with liberal quotes from the master of mythological studies, Joseph Campbell) to delve into the shadow self of the psyche and bring about healing and acceptance of this darker side of one's human nature. This does not mean that he is condoning evil or negativity...but is merely showing the reader how to get to the shadow self and work with it to help deal with negativity instead of supressing it.
The format is a step-by-step process in which the reader is introduced to an aspect of the shadow self through a guided meditation with a fairy tale for an example, then rituals are given for each new moon to further enforce what has been learned. Later in the book, more advanced workings are introduced.
Timothy's writing style is easy to follow and very straightforward while still being lyrical and very intelligent at the same time. One won't find white light workings here, but as we are reminded in this book, everyone has a dark side and balance is not achieved without working with it as well.

I really wanted to like this...

...but there's just not enough meat to it. The book is split in three parts. The first part is basically psychological and about claiming your "dark side". Throughout there are fairy tale inclusions a la Women Who Run With The Wolves and messages from "The Sage". My biggest problem is how Roderick uses many different definitons for your shadow which often conflict and contradict each other. He says your shadow is the part of your personality that you keep completely hidden from everyone including yourself. Then it is destructive actions that all can see. Then it is simply living in a way that run counter to your society's norms. I was so distracted by trying to reason out what Roderick was trying to say, and it seems like there is something worthwhile there, that nothing ended up resonating with me emotionally. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how I could make this mean something to me and trying to get something out of it. Another problem I had was that it seemed Roderick was writing for an audience that had never done any self-analysis whatsoever or had delved at all into the darker side of spirit. I can't help but feel that most of that intended audience would not seek out this book. Those that might be attracted to it may find it too redundant or simplistic.

You do have to be into new-agey, pseudo-shamanic activities to enjoy this. There are many guided meditations and arts and crafts activities incorporated. For example, first you are told to create a physical mask that represents your shadow self (I drew a sheild instead), then you make a bracelet with rattles to wear and shake whenever you catch yourself doing something negative (I adapted this into wearing a black hair band on my wrist and snapping it accordingly). Then there are parts describing the negative aspects of Wiccan-type workings, such as to the four directions, the seasons, moving widdershins, making a magic mirror, banishing spells. This can all be found in other books and won't be new to anyone except beginners. There are several pages for appendices, with lots of unused space for padding - natch. Here there are such items as recipes for "dark" oils and incenses. Wisdom oil contains cinnamon, myrrh, and lavender - buy why? Why are these ingredients used? This is what I want to know when I'm told to use them. That's not here. There is however a note to buy Cunningham's book on the subject, from the same publisher of course.

If this all sounds like it might work for you, go ahead and buy it. It's not bad to have if you can get it for a big discount, simply because having all this information in one place can be a good reminder to acknowledge these energies. Otherwise, I'm sure much more detailed information can be found elsewhere.

Marvelous. Almost Startling.

In our vulgar era, when the word "Celebrity" has been entirely divorced from "Worthy of Being Celebrated", Richard Schickel's Conversations with Scorsese is more than a damn good read; it's a restoration. What's being restored to our Access Hollywood-drenched culture is the notion art comes from inspiration, yes, but also hard work, seriousness of purpose, and intelligence. The line where Scorsese explains why he had to make Mean Streets just grabbed me. That's what art is--taking the truth of someone's life and expressing it, not in a navel-gazing way but as a way to touch upon something universal in the human condition.

Would just also add that Schickel's knowlege of film and filmmaking is right up there with Scorsese's well-know encyclopedic mind. "You know that 1928 film by Joe Blow from Prague?" "Oh, yeah, I loved that film." "The colors in it were amazing." "Yeah, that second act when the green tugboat is going up the gray Danube." "Kind of a silvery gray." "Fantastic." (Completely made-up dialogue to illustrate a point. No extra charge!)

A Charismatic Way to Write a Book

Richard Schickel's,"Conversations with Scorsese" is the first book I've ever read where the entire book is in a "Q & A" form equivalent to a long conversation.

There are several nuggets within "Conversations with Scorsese" that can be utilized within any industry.

1. Choose a profession that you have an undying love for and immerse yourself in your craft.

2. Within your vocation, become a historian of the past accomplishments of individuals who helped advance the industry.

3. Use the styles and patterns of past and present practitioners within your industry to lay a strong foundation.

4. Develop and create a body of work that is specific to your experiences.

5. Consistently fight for unadulterated ways of expressing your creativity without compunction.

6. Although you may be passionate about creating a body of work, realize that you are only one piece to a larger puzzle. Your work is built from the producers who came before you. And future generations of creators will build their work on the legacy you leave behind.

7. Be introspective enough to embrace your strengths and weaknesses.

"Conversations with Scorsese" exemplifies a charismatic way of writing a book that is active and engaging. The strength of the book lies in the ability to create a visual, auditory masterpiece using words as a medium. This creativity comes through the actual dialogue rather than the flowery prose found in traditional writing styles.

Scorsese in Detail

This book is a must-have for anyone interested in the intricacies of the filmmaking process from inception to script to filming to finally editing and releasing the film. If you've ever wondered what Scorsese's thought about one of his movies, the answer lies herein.

This extremely interesting and insightful book by filmmaker and reviewer Richard Schickel delves into Scorsese's origins to his film Shutter Island, essentially covering everything. The book goes in depth into just everything you could possibly want to know about the man or the films.

This book will hopefully be among the great film books in history, perhaps among such (now) classics as Francois Truffaut's famed interviews with Alfred Hitchcock, the Master of Suspense. If you are a fan of Scorsese and enjoy his films, I urge you to purchase this book. It's worth the price, and it's most definitely worth your time.

An Excellent Range of Voices and Cultures

Jessica Hagedorn has put together a mostly impressive collection of short stories and a few novel excerpts written by Asian Americans. From well-known names to lesser known talents, this anthology covers the wide terrain of both stylistic approaches and Asian cultures. Its writers can claim heritages from Vietnam, India, the Philippines, China, Taiwan, Japan, Cambodia, and Korea. Some stories, such as Peter Ho Davies's "The Hull Case," have little, if anything, to do with Asian culture, but most have stronger connections to cultural uniqueness. Sarah Chin's "Red Wall" follows a Chinese-American narrator as she explores the faces of China as the member of a documentary film crew. Bharati Mukherjee, in her well-known and powerful story "The Management of Grief," explores the impact on the Canadian-Indian community of a plane crash in India that kills their loved ones. Ka Vang's "Ms. Pac-Man Ruined My Gang Life" tells of a Hmong member of a girl-gang who is forced by her home-girls to exact revenge on a Puerto Rican girl. Gish Jen's strong "Who's Irish?" is movingly told in broken but lucid English by a Chinese woman who doesn't like the wildness in her half-Irish granddaughter. Some of my favorite writers are included here: Chang-Rae Lee, Ruth Ozeki, Akhil Sharma, Mukherjee, Jhumpa Lahiri, Monique Truong. However, many of these forty-two writers were unknown to me before I read their stories, and I'm grateful Hagedorn introduced me to their work.
While some of these stories fall short of succeeding, all are well-written. The range in voices gives the reader a sense of the variety of the cultures and their individual members. I recommend this for readers of international fiction as well as Asian-Americans who long for writers who speak to their culture. This would make an excellent textbook for high school and college level courses that explore non-Western contemporary literature.

Asian American Experience Through Literature

Jessica Hagedorn's second installment of the Asian American experience, CHARLIE CHAN IS DEAD 2: AT HOME WITH THE WORLD comprises of a diverse group of provocative Asian American fictional writers who share their inspiring stories. These writers are third-fifth generation Asian Americans who were either born or immigrated to the United States during the late 1950s and 1960s and lived their formative years during the 1970s and 1980s influenced by American material and popular culture, which is a significance distinction that defines their identity. This factor captures the essence of American and Asian culture, which embodies an eclectic marriage to large proportions. All the writers and their essays have merits of their own. However, it is their storytelling that reveals a shared intimacy and complexity, which forms this shared experience. The subtitle of the book is quite fitting because it best describes "home" within this diaspora of writers.

CHARLIE CHAN IS DEAD 2 is rich with Asian American culture. The dialogue and dialects reveal the various voices and faces, which journey beyond US boundaries. The essays in this collection are graphically detailed with metaphors that relate to religion, family, and Asian cuisine. These writers embrace their culture with the voices they provide for the characters they present. The writers jokingly confront stereotypes and acknowledge and understand that it is a part of their identity. The stories speak of the present but resonate with the past struggles Asian Americans have had to experience in the United States.

The essays in CHARLIE CHAN IS DEAD 2 offer a fresh mix of Asian American voices that may appeal to a younger group of readers preferably at the high school and college level. However, it is not limited to anyone interested in literature of any genre. The most helpful aspect of this volume is its bibliographical listing at the end of the book, which may encourage first-time readers of Asian American literature to read on. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll recognize facets of your own life

Great collection of short stories by many different writers. Each story has its own mood, setting, and way of interacting with characters that is inherently part of a specific culture. I had to buy this for a college course but ended up reading more than what my professor assigned. Also, I really felt a connection with a few of the stories. They told of experiences I could really relate to.

Not like other Bentley manuals

I have Bentley manuals for a variety of BMWs with manufacturing dates ranging from 1985 to 2007. I find this manual not very helpful. I think the vast technology and engineering changes that are taking place for the X3 make a comprehensive manual very difficult. I purchased the manual to help with replacing the serpentine belt and valve cover gasket. My 2007 X3 valve cover and its attached appliances were nowhere mentioned in the Bentley's instructions for valve cover gasket replacement. I think web searches and YouTube out smart this manual. Save 125 dollars and look elsewhere for X3 DIY help.

About the Author
Frederic S. Mishkin is Alfred Lerner Professor of Banking and Financial Institutions at the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University, Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, a past Executive Vice President and Director of Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and after finishing this book was appointed a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. He is the author of "The Next Great Globalization: How Disadvantaged Nations Can Harness Their Financial Systems to Get Rich" and other books.

Good Book, still has some errors.

This is a good textbook that really helped me gain a good understanding of monetary policy. It covers current topics such as inflation targeting, the Taylor principle, sterilized currency intervention and the zero lower bound. The book also covered supply and demand for investments and what factors cause supply and demand to increase and decrease.

I feel like I have a good grasp of what is going on currently inside the Fed. Bernanke is using inflation targeting and Mishkin is a proponent of the tactic. It also covered quantitative easing and the time preference theory of bond investment. I think I have a good grasp of the topic. Several chapters have appendices that are available for free online. Reading through those was an extra bonus when it came to test time.

The book did have a couple of errors. Sometimes it would be a slight grammar error or a slight math error. Sometimes it would say something that was completely the opposite of what it said in the next sentence. Fortunately there was enough content that I was able to work through these but to notice an error every 50 pages or so was grating. A book in its tenth edition should not have these issues.

Because I found this book to be a great supplement to my macroeconomic studies I'll rate it highly. For the crazy prices that publishers charge for textbooks, this book deserves another rundown from the editors.

Absolutely excellent teacher; learned so much from this book!

This is a brilliant book. I bought this as a lay person to understand how banking and the markets work. Its so well written and easy to follow. He really breaks things down so you can really understand, he does not use abbreviations without explaining them, and he guides you to comprehend everything. its clear he really knows banking and the markets and really teaches you. I've learned so much, and now can follow and understand the news and papers, and annual reports much better.

What Do You Know, An Economics Textbook...

Well, I am using this book for a course need for my Master's program. The book itself, is well, a book. However, it can be extremely dry (i know, surprise, surprise), but is an overall easy read. The book came packaged well and was in excellent condition. I would not recommend this book as a free-read, but if you need to purchase it for a course, this is probably your best option (price, shipping, and quality)!

totally surprised!

recv'd my book in the mail, I will admit the shipping took awhile but it was well worth the wait! The book was in perfect condition, except for very minimal highlights! I absolutely could not believe I got such a great deal on this book. Kudos to the previous owner. Thank you

This book is a reprint of the 1913 edition published by Cosmopolitan Magazine. IT IS NOT A COMPLETE VERSION. Some parts, I think the most typical for Jack London, are absent. (For example sport games and fighting in Weasel Park, Chapter IV, are not present in this edition.)
I think the version can be used to comparative analysis by specialists in history of literature but if you want to take pleasure in reading I strongly recommend you to purchase another edition.

What a great book!!

I read this book after biking through a lot of the California towns London mentions. I pedaled through Glen Ellen and saw some of the missions. Since I am male, I could relate to the character of Billy. He is an early 20th century renaissance man. I never got bored with this book. It has a lot of personal meaning to me. I come from some of the "old stock" Billy and Saxon refer to. Tons of detail. I had to read it twice to get all the details. If you like northern California and want to know what it was like 100 years ago, read this.

A Testament of Love

As in many of his books, Jack London enraptes the reader, but this time in a story of love. It is extremely refreshing because it shows the good side of true love without that sickening sweetness so many love stories have... I read this book a few years back and read it again just recently. I am SIXTEEN. This book is definetly one that many can enjoy, no matter your age.
