An Unforgettable Voyage

"Wow! What a life you've had so far. You ought to write a book!" How many of us have heard these words or at least said them to someone else? One New Zealand woman, though claiming she wasn't a writer, took the advice to heart. Reliving her life for the sake of getting it all down on paper could not have been easy for Dawn McMichael, but we are the richer for it. (I was excited, too, to see that one of my favorite authors, Judith Richards [Summer Lightning, Too Blue to Fly, Katrina Rising], edited this book.)
Exceptionally creative, Dawn was awarded for her talented fashion designs while still a young woman, but she followed her heart, married (the wrong man), bore six children, and worked 24/7 to help her husband reach his goal: to be a "millionaire farmer." What makes this part of her journey so extraordinary is that Dawn's recollections of those years come straight from the heart. You feel her uncertainty, her loyalty, her sorrow, and her joy, especially when she recalls time spent with her children, her parents, and her siblings.
What follows is a series of nearly unbelievable adventures - in the sky, on the high seas, in foreign lands - many of which she experiences with the remarkable Captain David McMichael, a man she admires from the moment she meets him and will later learn to love. The reader knows from the outset, of course, that author Dawn "McMichael" will eventually marry her captain; nevertheless, she manages to draw us into the suspense leading to her momentous decision to accept his proposal.
Sailing Through Life - cleverly written in the third person - is a must for lovers of (auto)biography, for fans of adventure stories, for sailing enthusiasts and, perhaps especially, for people who feel they've made the wrong choices and have nowhere to go. Dawn McMichael's inspirational story is well worth your time. You'll never again face a blank wall without imagining an endless ocean of opportunity on the other side.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book

Dawn takes you with her on her journeys around the world, and it is both companionable and interesting. There is always an authenticity to a work written straight from life even when at times the telling can be of things stranger than fiction. Thank you Dawn for writing this book. I feel that I have gotten to know you and am happier for it.Your courage was uplifting and your your style of writing a pleasure to read.
