A very good text for a course in MV statistics

There exists a growing library of multivariate texts that include considerable depth and cover of a dazzling array of applications. The Essence of Multivariate Thinkingis a different kind of textbook. This is a short text that reads more like a series of handouts from an excellent course than a multivariate reference. The author makes clear that the goals of the book are not to present complete details of each method, rather the primary goal is to present a context for understanding multivariate analyses.

Most readers with an interest in MV statistics are familiar with the "gold standard" of the field, Tabachnick and Fidell's (2001) Using Multivariate Statistics (T&F for short). Perhaps the most relevant question for instructors and researchers is how Essence compares to T&F. T&F is a user-friendly, detailed and expansive statistical handbook that is a reference for research and teaching. Essence focuses on general strategies for understanding and thinking about MV statistics and learning the basics of several applications. This is not a text directed at researchers applying the procedures - for whom I strongly recommend T&F - but it is very well suited for instruction.

In reading the text, I was struck by how easy it would be to build a course around the book and supporting materials. Assignments, data, and computer programming code supplement the highly readable chapters. I would strongly recommend this text to first-time instructors, as the accompanying assignments and SAS materials are mostly ready-to-use and would reduce course preparation time considerably.

Perhaps the best thing I can say about the book is that after reading it I decided to adopt it for use in my own MV stats course.

Well-written and informative

Well-written and informative, this book was among my favorite class texts. I found the organization of the chapters and topics to be helpful. Charts and tables clearly summarized main points. I liked using the provided data to work through each statistical procedure. Using this familiar data set increased my confidence as I learned the similarities and differences among the analyses. I bought this book for class, but I have since referenced it many times while writing papers for other classes and my dissertation proposal.

Another Great Irvine Welsh Novel.

Mr. Welsh is among my favorite contemporary novelists. I have read 5 or 6 of his novels and have enjoyed all of them greatly. "Filth" is among his best. We all know "Trainspotting" thanks to Danny Boyle but "Filth" in my opinion (they also made it into a film - with a brilliant performance by James McIlvoy) is far more enjoyable. I will continue to read Welsh whenever he publishes anything new and I look forward to his new works greatly.

He's an incredible swine......

The main character Bruce Robertson is truly filth. He is a police sergeant but doesn't mind stealing from the public, from his friends, turning his co-workers against each other, all to his own benefit. I won't go into what he does on his holiday in Amsterdam. He uses and abuses women for his own pleasure.The book opens a view of police of police corruption outside of the U.S. (where police corruption is almost commonplace. Written in the vernacular of cops, the book almost makes you feel sorry for the main character, almost.Once you start reading this book it will be hard to put down. A very good book.

I PICKED THIS ONE UP ON THE STRENGTH OF ONLY SEEING TRAINSPOTTING AND NEVER HAVING ACTUALLY READ THE BOOK. I KNOW IT SOUNDS STUPID, BUT I AM GLAD I DID.
THE WHOLE STORY LEFT MY MIND DIRTY IN SOME SPOTS LAUGHING IN OTHERS. IF YOU CAN PRETEND YOU'RE A SCOTSMAN WHILE YOU ARE READING IT THE STYLEI IN WHICH WELSH WROTE FILTH WILL BE NO PROBLEM, IF YOU CAN NOT IT MIGHT BE A HARD READ. I THINK THAT'S WHY OTHER REVIEWERS DID NOT ENJOY THE BOOK AS MUCH AS I DID.
IT WAS A SMART READ, WICH YOU DO NOT GET ALOT THESE DAYS. THE STORY BACK TRACKS ONTO ITSELF. YOU THINK ONE THING IS GOING BUT ANOTHER IS REALLY HAPPENING. IS IT THE PARASITE TALKING OR IS THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE STORY NUTS. IS HIS WIFE REALLY COMING BACK? AND WILL HE EVER GET ANOTHER VACTION?
JUST READ THIS AND FIND OUT. IT WAS AMAZING.

This accessible and moving group biography portrays the men of Company A, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, who were part of the first wave at Omaha Beach in WWII. Initially, 103 of them left the small town of Bedford, Va.-now the site of the national D-Day memorial-when the local National Guard was called up in 1940; 34 were still with the company on D-Day. Of these, 19 died in a matter of minutes and three more perished in the Normandy campaign. Men lost ranged from the company commander, Captain Taylor N. Fellers, from a wealthy Bedford family, to Frank Draper Jr., a fine athlete and soldier from the wrong side of the tracks. Long-time National Guardsman John Wilkes died as the company's top sergeant, while Earl Parker left behind a daughter he never saw. Both Holback brothers and Ray Stevens died, while Ray's twin Roy Stevens was one of the handful of survivors. Kershaw (Jack London) includes combat sequences that give a vivid private's- eye view of the particular hell that was Omaha Beach, while one of the most moving portions of the book is the simultaneous arrival in Bedford of nine "We regret to inform you..." telegrams. A capsule history of Bedford before the war, its role as part of the home front during it and its current place as (controversial) memorial site are all covered, but the book's central focus is on the town where a good many survivors remain whose memories have not faded and whose emotional wounds have not healed.

On June 6, 1944, Allied armies launched their massive invasion of Europe--D-Day, in other words. Among the thousands of soldiers headed for France were 34 men from the town of Bedford, Virginia, aboard Empire Javelin, a British troopship. Nineteen of them were killed in the first minutes of combat, when their landing craft dropped them into the water off Normandy. Two more were killed later in the day from gunshot wounds. No other town in the U.S. endured a greater one-day loss. Kershaw's book is more than just another war story; here is an in-depth account of this blue-collar town and its 3,000 people. The soldiers included three sets of brothers, a pool-hall hustler, husbands, farmers, and a couple of "highly successful Lotharios." Kershaw describes in painful detail how the next of kin were notified of the soldiers' deaths via Western Union telegrams and how the news devastated their lives. Drawing on interviews with survivors and relatives, newspaper clippings, letters, and diaries, Kershaw has chronicled one community's great sacrifice. George Cohen

Excellent book to learn more about Normandy and what our soldiers had to endure. Learned so much and written in a fashion that was easy for this old lady to understand. It may be silly but i really enjoyed the pictures. Will be reading more by this author.

The true cost of war

I would have thought that since the publication of Stephen Ambrose's authoritative D-Day June 6, 1944: The Climatic Battle of World War II subsequent authors would have little new to say about the epic battle that turned the tide of WWII in Europe. Luckily for us Alex Kershaw has managed to find a new angle.

The Bedford Boys focuses on Company A of the 116th infantry regiment, which was among the first units to land on D-Day. Company A was largely composed of residents of Bedford, VA. population 3000 in 1944, 22 Bedford Boys didn't return From Europe.

Kershaw relies on first person interviews for the bulk of the book, which gives the combat scenes a visceral quality. Kershaw takes you right down to the water line, as bullets whiz past your ear, and you wait for the ramp to drop. I have read many books on WWII, and these combat scenes are the best I've ever come across.

What sets Kershaw's narrative apart however is his ability to juxtapose the combat scenes with scenes from the homefront so as to give the reader a more complete understanding of the true cost of war.

An Answer to A hungry Heart

Years of a thristy heart and no one to define this yearning, I was filled with wonder and unspeakable joy when I read this book and found the answers to my many questions. When there were years of a deep calling in the heart and a unexplainable love for God and no one to define this aching,it was like sighing in relief as I read the very things that God had been doing in and through me was not my imagination but and an actual experience with the Holy One.
There are many men and women who have had as deep and abiding relationship with the Sovereign Lord, Jesus Christ. To actually put down on paper this life experience of relating to God on a personal bases would refresh the mind and bring delight to the heart. Like one receiving a cool drink of water, this book settled any question of scriptural correctness in relating to God, the Father.
It is unfortunate that there has not been sufficient scriptural teaching on prayer but this book opens the door to freeing the heart and the longing to please God. Also it releases the reader to find their God given expression and then to enjoy and release others to their God given expression.
I am sorry that some readers may take an offence to this book and the information inside. But let us be responsible readers and look up the scriptures for ourselves and see that God has laid out a pattern for relating to Him and He will never leave us without an answer. In the search for truth, God will not disappoint but meet us on that road to understanding. Thus He gives people who have walked before us and can point the way. We grant teachers the permission to mold our minds and provoke us to learn, should we not see these gifted men and women (like Alice Smith)as providers of instruction and education?
Thank you Alice Smith for being vulnerable and risking exposure of a deep and personal relatonship that many of us long for and have not yet known. This book will open the door to a journey filled with surpises and wonder, plus a depth of relating to God long awaited for.

Experiencing the Joy of Partnering in Prayer

I don't know what book the previous reviewer read, but the Beyond the Veil, by Alice Smith that I read was deeply bathed with scriptural references. It not only was based in a biblical foundation, it literally draws you beyond the typical teaching on prayer and encourages you towards a greater understanding of God's desire for every Christian in prayer. I found that through the teaching is this book, my relationship with God was intensified and I began to see how God could use me to effectually partner with Him in prayer to see changes on our physical world and in the lives of the people around me. If you are desiring a deeper level of relationship with God, I urge you to get this book and begin to understand how to partner with God in intercession. If you put into practice what you learn from this book, you will experience the joy of seeing God working in the lives of those you interceed for and you will know by witnessing for yourself how God changes things when we partner with Him in prayer.

Wonderful truth

All I can say is that this book is a timely birth. As creatures prone to mistakes, we can deliberately concoct a lot of undeserving scenes and excuses as to why God delays answers. However Alice does a simple and wonderful work by uprooting those types of false perceptions and ideologies and planting in us powerful truth.
This book is written because perhaps many of us are still lingering in the outer court. God Himself desires we come boldly before Him. The path towards His secret chamber requires only a step of simplicity and faith-filled attitude. McCullough came through yet again!!!!! What an expansion to end the nearly 2 years of a wonderfully in depth narrative skirmish based wargame. As a terrain builder in general frostgrave hit close to the heart from the beginning, but because of this author in particular i will continue to purchase osprey products for ages to come.
