Oseland, who has lived in Singapore for 20 years, hopes to help people who haven't had the benefit of a trip to West Sumatra or Kuala Lumpur to discover those places' scents and tastes. Oseland devotes close to half the book to explaining ingredients, techniques and eating traditions as well as relating anecdotes from 20 years of roaming the islands and picking up the natives' cooking wisdom. Many ingredients will require special trips to ethnic markets, though Oseland allows for some substitution or omission of difficult-to-find items like fresh galangal or daun salam leaves. The first chapter covers sambals, every meal's essential spicy accompaniment, as well as other small dishes like the fiery Sweet-Sour Cucumber and Carrot Pickle with Turmeric; he follows with slightly more familiar street foods and snacks such as satays and gado-gado, then rice and noodles in all their guises, from simple, heavenly steamed rice to the zingy Malaysian Penang-Style Stir-Fried Kuey Teow Noodles. Oseland's instructions are detailed, and he makes a convincing case that with a little time and care, the best of these complex, interrelated cuisines can be enjoyed thousands of miles from their origin. Excellent Book

I've owned this book since 2007 or so and cooked most of the recipes in it. Do not be put off by the reviews that complain there aren't enough photos -- go online if you want a picture or just figure it out yourself.

While these recipes are generally easy to follow it will take some time to get the balance right in many of them. This is home cooking at its best, which means you have to get a feel for it.

Not all recipes are great -- chicken rendang is tough to keep moist. But then there's the nyonya pork and the beef rendang. Absolutely incredible and surprisingly easy. The chapter on vegetables is also a revelation...

Passion for the palate

I'm a chef and have been fortunate to travel somewhat extensively to the three countries whose cuisines are covered in this book, particularly Indonesia. I love this book. I'm actually relocating to Malaysia soon, and this book will go with me. It's great as a cookbook, but its true delight is found in the prose that accompanies the recipes, recounting the author's experiences in SE Asia, discussing hints for shopping at an Asian market, selecting the best spices, etc. I've had many of the dishes in the book, from satays in Bali to Padang-style food in Jakarta to the wonderful gudeg and ayam bubur in Yogyakarta to a fantastic fusion of Chinese, Malay, and Indian street food in Kuala Lumpur, to the comfort-food appeal of Nyonya cooking in small, family-run restaurants in Melaka (Malacca) to the fantastic crossroads of cuisine found in Singapore (indeed, about the only things to really do in Singapore are shop and eat).

It's been said that food is the most apparent uniter of any culture, and that once everything else has been watered down or weaned away completely (think of Greek or Italian immigrants who have come to America), the last cultural identifier that remains is the food. It's so true, and this book absolutely takes you on a cultural and culinary journey. The author's passion for food and for the people of these fascinating countries practically leaps off the pages. The wonder of Indo-Malay cuisine is indeed the best-kept secret in Asia. Any sizeable city in America is likely to be overrun with Chinese and Thai restaurants. Vietnamese food is plentiful, and you can usually find Korean or Japanese food without much difficulty. But try to find an Indonesian restaurant, or a Malaysian restaurant serving up Nyonya chicken. If you do find one at all, it's likely to disappoint if you've ever spent any time in these countries. This book is the cure for what ails you.

Any cookbook will offer a list of ingredients, preparation instructions (in varying degrees of clarity and depth), and occasional notes on the dish itself. This book utterly transcends the basic offering. Virtually every recipe is replete with anecdotes, personal observations, and a truly in-depth guide to making the dish spectactular. I do wish there were more color photos, the few that are included aren't really sufficient, but the quality of the recipes and the fantastic depth of the writing more than makes up for it.

Highly, highly recommended.

great intro to Indonesian cooking

I've cooked many recipes from this cookbook, and it's been great. The food is delicious, and the instructions are clear. The recipes have been adjusted to take into account the availability of ingredients for American kitchens, but except for that, the recipes seem true to the authentic flavors.

Sometimes the cooking instructions have been oversimplified and dumbed-down too much (as in frying potatoes one piece at a time, for example), and that's my only criticism of the book. But for a beginning cook, or a cook intimidated by or unfamiliar with Asian cuisines, the detailed play-by-play instructions may be a plus.

I bought my book from Amazon after browsing the Cradle of Flavor online message board (Egullet forums). A group of people have cooked every recipe in the book and posted numerous photos and comments.

Overall I recommend this book as an excellent introduction to Indonesian cooking.

He reveals how the sons of former vice president Al Gore, one-time Hollywood power broker Michael Ovitz, and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist leapt ahead of more deserving applicants at Harvard, Brown, and Princeton. He explores favoritism at the Ivy Leagues, Duke, the University of Virginia, and Notre Dame, among other institutions. He reveals that colleges hold Asian American students to a higher standard than whites; comply with Title IX by giving scholarships to rich women in “patrician sports” like horseback riding, squash, and crew; and repay congressmen for favors by admitting their children. He also reveals that Harvard maintains a “Z-list” for well-connected but underqualified students, who are quietly admitted on the condition that they wait a year to enroll.

A heavy-hitting, name-naming exposé by Wall Street Journal deputy bureau chief Golden concludes that Ivy League admissions offices do not practice meritocracy. Instead, top-drawer schools reward donor-happy alums and the "legacy establishment," which Golden defines as "elites mastering the art of perpetuating themselves." Moreover, the "preference of privilege" enables wealthy candidates to nose out more deserving working- and middle-class students, especially new immigrants and Asian-Americans. Golden backs his assertions with examples comparing the academic records of entering students: e.g., Al Gore's son was admitted to Harvard despite his shabby record, although a better prepared Asian-American was rejected at all Ivy Leagues because he was "unhooked" (in admission parlance, not well connected or moneyed). Asian-Americans, notes Golden, are the "new Jews," for whom a higher bar is set. Golden tracks shameful admissions policies at Duke, where the enrollment of privileged but underqualified applicants has helped elevate the school's endowment ranking from 25th in 1980 to 16th in 2005; Brown is skewered for courting the offspring of entertainment industry notables. About the Author
Daniel Golden is Deputy Bureau Chief at the Boston bureau of The Wall Street Journal, where he has covered education since 1999. Previously, he was a reporter at the Boston Globe. The recipient of numerous journalistic honors and awards, including the Pulitzer Prize and the George Polk Award, he holds a B.A. from Harvard College. He lives with his wife and son in Belmont, Massachusetts.

College Admissions Expose'

It is a fast read, but well written and informative. The book provides an insight into why Ivy League schools admit the students that they do, and the shock at the caliber of students rejected by elite universities.

How journalism is supposed to be done

Golden's researching ability and ability to write is clearly superior to any journalist working in mainstream American journalism that I know. This book exposes the secret that the powerful do not want exposed, the lie of meritocracy in our education system.

Using substantial evidence to support his arguments, Golden shows that the already privileged are privileged again in the college admission process by de facto affirmative action for whites such as legacy, wealthy donor, and certain athletic preferences. Golden's recommendation of abolishing such preferences for the privileged but maintaining affirmative action for under privileged minorities and some socioeconomic groups is sensible. He shows that such models do work quite well rebutting the common excuse given for such preferences based on the ability to raise sufficient funding. Golden gives three well-known examples of excellent institutions of higher education such as Caltech, Berea College and Cooper Union that actually disadvantages the already privileged but manages to raise enough funding for world class quality of education and student services. His argument here as elsewhere is very convincing.

Many of the negative reviews claimed that Golden only used individual example cases suggesting limited evidence or even bias in this work. Did these reviewers even read the same book I did? I got the 2009 edition and it includes a diverse amount of convincing evidence such as studies by independent organizations and scholars, internal records and investigations from the universities in question and many surprisingly candid testimonial evidence from current or former admission staff that such preferences exist all to the detriment of certain groups. There is overwhelming evidence of that preference and the fact that the principle groups that are harmed by them are Asians of all socioeconomic classes, both foreign or American, and low income but academically talented whites. I have to question the motive of anyone raising such criticisms. Perhaps they are some of the very people so privileged and having a sense of entitlement threatened by the meritocratic and egalitarian dream this country is supposedly founded on. This book wishes to affirm through well researched investigative reporting that dream.

As good as this book is, however, I think I should warn the potential reader that in the kindle edition, there are many typographical errors and the links to the notes section has not been put in the body of the text (in my version anyway).

Lays Bare the facade of the ivy league

I loved this book. It lays bare the admissions process of the ivy league and "better" colleges and helps people re-think the status of those institutions. It's very well written and has great anecdotes about how posturing not character or talent, will often get you into these schools. I loved a couple of the anecdotes about how Brown University's admissions office loves the Hollywood set. It's a must read for everyone, but especially for parents who think those schools are "the" ticket to success. They aren't and the phoniness of it all is revealed.

First off, Eisner does a great job of combining visual elements with his text in this book. The whole thing is illustrated with cavemen working on their storytelling technique, and I have to admit that the cavemen illustrations were great fun and always helped to clarify the how side of what he was saying in the text. Beautifully done. (Yes, I know, this is like saying, "Hey, y'know that Hemingway guy? Some of his stories were really good.")

Does it have any issues? Yes. It's 164 heavily illustrated pages. You can read it in an afternoon. And some of the illustrative pieces feel over-long for the point they are trying to prove. I hit the point on a couple of them where I found myself saying, "Yes, I get it. We needed the X in the beginning so we would understand Y now. Can we move on?" I also felt that, at 164 pages, he didn't really have the opportunity to go into depth on some areas. There's a point where he provided two bad examples of a comic script... and no good example. Aaaaah!

Even with those issues in mind, I have to give the book 4 caped crime-fighters out of five. It's well-written (though there are also some grammatical gaffs that make me want to scream), it's engaging, and it's instructive. Worth the read.

Useful tips for the beginner artists

[[VIDEOID:31057701]]Telling a good story is an incredibly difficult. In this book, Will Eisner shares with readers some of things to be aware of when tackling storytelling using comics.

He talks about techniques to use to help build a more convincing story. This would include comic tools like lettering, building momentum, using visual clues and writing. Examples include how props (i.e. guns) are held to reveal human characteristics.

There are lessons on how to engage readers, how readers think and mistakes to avoid. These are followed with lots of comic strip examples -- including a selection from different comic artists. Unfortunately, they aren't captioned page by page like it was done on his other books. The comic examples are great, you know it but you don't know why they work.

The book doesn't really go in depth into all aspects of storytelling. There's no talk on character development, story arcs, conflict management and specific story elements and tools.

Overall, this is still a very useful book for anyone who's just starting out and thinking of drawing their own comics.

Wild Waters is a Wild Ride

My 11 yr old son has been interested in Rob Kidd's POTC and Young Jack Sparrow Series for 2 years now. It took us several years to find books for him to read that kept his interest. This series and the Young Jack Sparrow Series have done that. In his words Wild Waters was packed full of fun and excitement and he cant wait for the next one to come out. His level of reading is age appropriate and this series is getting a tad "easy" for him but the story and plot lines encourage his imagination. He and his friends are all reading them now (thank heavens we have the whole series which we've loaned out to 3 of his friends) and then they acted out the various scenes and made up new ones all summer long. He reads for 20-30 min at night before bed and some nights trying to get him to put it up to sleep is a chore. They are a great series of books as Ive said, even dad and I enjoy reading them so that we can ask him questions and be able to identify with something he enjoys.

it took me years to find this book. One day I randomly search for it and they were selling them for a reasonable price (some people wanted to sell it for $40). I'm a big fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean and I this is great for my collection. The shipping was great, it got in time and it was exactly what i wanted. I don't mind buying it used, i like this eco-friendly book recycle concept. Thank you so much

About the Author

Jay B. Barney is Bank Chair in Corporate Strategy at the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University. He received his Ph.D. from Yale, and has held faculty appointments at UCLA and Texas A&M. Jay has published more than 40 articles in several journals including AMR, AMJ, and AME; has served on the editorial boards of AMR, SMJ, The Human Resource Management Journal, and Organizational Science; and has also served as an Associate Editor at The Journal of Management, Senior Editor at Organization Science, and Special Issue Editor at SMJ. In 1992, he won the College of Business Research Award at Texas A&M, and in 1997 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Lund University (in Lund, Sweden). Jay teaches Business Policy and Strategy, and has taught in executive programs at UCLA, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Michigan, SMU, TCU, and Bocconi University (in Milan, Italy). He has won teaching awards at UCLA (1983), Texas A&M (1992), and Ohio State (1996, 1997, and 1999), and has consulted with more than 20 firms around the world, including Hewlett-Packard, Texas Instruments, and Arco. In 1989, Jay was elected to the BPS Executive Committee. Later was elected the Committee's Assistant Program Chair, and subsequently served as Program Chair, Chair Elect, and Chair of the BPS Division. He completed his service at the Past Chair of the Division in 1997.

PERSPECTIVE IS EVERYTHING

This is a great book - more for what it organises than what it adds as new ideas.
Barney sets a model for Competitive Advantage (VIRO) and them compares strategic models as potential sources. It places many of the modern attempts in perspective. Without this starting understanding, the modern gurus (Hamel) are almost impossible to apply as their ideas lack the perspective on the role of strategy within an organisation and within all of the other management tools.
It places Michael Porter within a framework where his work can be better used.
For managers and post graduates, this book sets out the fundamentals of strategy and where it can take you.
Not cheap (by a long way) but a fair price for the knowledge.

Strategy is not that difficult!

This is a very concise and interesting book on competitive and corporate strategies. It compiles all the main issues regarding studies on competitive advantage withouth losing focus on the specifics of each different kind of strategy.
I would recommend using the book only after a review of microeconomic concepts. This will allow graduate business students coming from other areas (like engineering) to grasp the strategy concepts more easily.
One suggestion: it would be nice if the authors included cases at the end of each chapter. Since the book presents the theory from a basic up to a more advanced level, this would let students to quickly fix the concepts by applying them in real world situations.

How To Frame Corporate Strategy Methodically

Jay B. Barney has written an enduring, understandable user's guide to corporate strategy that is a must read for any business student. Barney helps would-be business leaders frame their strategic decision-making process. Barney first explains to his audience the concepts of strategy and performance, and their relevance to the corporate organization both internally and externally. Barney then explores the different strategies that the corporation can adopt in dealing with its competitive environment: Cost leadership, product differentiation, tacit collusion, and alliances. The author does a very good job in demonstrating to his readers that the four strategies are not mutually exclusive but occasionally complementary. Finally, Barney explores how a company can structure itself across markets over time. He successively addresses the issues of integration, diversification, mergers and acquisitions, and globalization. Gaining and Sustaining Competitive Advantage has been one of the most influential business textbooks that I have ever been asked to read.

This is one of the best New Critical Idiom titles: well-organized, clearly written, balanced and thoughtful, both comprehensive and comprehensible. If you need an introduction to the field of ecocriticism, this is the best place to start.

Contrary to what the previous reviewer claims, the book has well-informed discussions of both Christianity (in a chapter on Apocalypse, where he contrasts millenialist visions of the end of the world with Augustine's "comic" (i.e. unpredictable) eschatology) and of various eco-feminist and deep-ecological ideas of the Great Mother. Garrard is a generous reader, but does not hesitate to point out excesses and contradictions. His distinction between "problems in ecology" (which call for scientific analysis) and "ecological problems" (requiring social and cultural understanding) is worth the price of the book.

A Handy Guide to to the Field of Ecocriticism

To write a book that claims to give an account of a field and its terminology is inevitably to expose oneself to criticism. Why does Garrard write about this and not that? Does this particular argument really deserve the airtime it gets? I imagine we could go on like this forever, because the boundaries of ecocriticism are often contested, and some people who could be said to do ecocriticism don't call themselves ecocritics. There were some things about this book that I wish were different based on my own particular viewpoints.

But to evaluate this book fairly we have to evaluate it sympathetically, and to do that it is worth reminding ourselves of what this book is. Garrard's book should be seen as a kind of gateway to ecocriticism, and it is a very good one. Garrard provides thorough glosses of the concepts and problems that drive ecocriticism, sketches out the various positions that might fall under the ecocriticism label, and gives a detailed account of the thought that forms ecocriticism's theoretical underpinnings.

I have the second edition, which covers the major developments in the field over the course of the 2000s, and so Garrard's book is more useful for a scholar finding his or her way into the field than, say, The Ecocriticism Reader: Landmarks in Literary Ecology which, given that its role was to get a scholarly conversation started, is now somewhat dated.

Because this book is mostly about giving a gloss to a body of scholarship, it is not eminently citable if one is actually doing research. I would also only make it optional in a classroom, as a seminar discussion would be better spent on an actual literary or theoretical text than a gloss. The literary analyses model point to ways of doing ecocritical inquiry into different genres, but they can also be hard to evaluate and may be of little interest if you don't know the texts. My biggest criticism is that some of the analyses remain underdeveloped in this new edition, and I wish that there were more of a dissection of some ecocritical commonplaces that we really ought to have dispensed with by now..

What is most valuable about this book is that it points the way to a genuinely critical mode of ecocriticism, as opposed to art appreciation or commentary, or worse, what has been called "the praise song school of ecocriticism." Appreciation and commentary are a necessary phase of starting a conversation, but doing that kind of scholarship forever is rather pointless. If you are a beginner broaching the field of ecocriticism, you can save yourself some time by starting with this book. And if you are more familiar with the territory, this book is still worth having in reach, if only because it is useful in pointing out possible directions through the kinds of conceptual problems one bumps into when undertaking ecocritical scholarship, however one wishes to define that term.

This book can't be everything to everybody interested in ecocriticism, but that's probably a good thing for ecocriticism. The fact that ecocriticism can't be reduced to a two hundred page volume is surely indicative that there is enough heterogeneity to sustain it as a viable mode of critical inquiry.

Interesting viewpoints

This was a required text for a class I am taking on "The Ecological Chaucer," and at first I was very skeptical. I'm not claiming to be any type of expert, but the ideas in this book are engaging and timely for our Green-movement-obsessed generation. The application of this critique to other texts, especially classical texts, has been very informative and allows a new engagement with authors about whom much is already written.
