In 1947 at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, hundreds of well-preserved, nearly complete skeletons of the tiny Coelophysis dinosaur were uncovered lying close together, some even stacked on top of one another, in a 30-square-foot area. Why were all those dinosaurs buried in one place? Gillette, one of the paleontologists working to solve the mystery, offers several popular hypotheses: poisoned water, asteroids, or a flood. She then cites evidence from surrounding bones and rocks to support or discredit each theory, and her exploration makes for fascinating reading. Henderson's beautifully rendered photo-realist paintings are equally fascinating, transporting the reader back millions of years to the Triassic period. This entertaining and enlightening book will also help young scientists gain insight into the process of formulating and testing hypotheses. Lauren Peterson

Great book for teaching kids how to arrive at possible explanations for a phenomenon -- in this case, why were so many dinosaur skeletons found in one place and why were their bones arranged in the way they were.

A Dinosaur Book That Reads Like A Mystery

Dinosaur Ghosts: The Mystery of Coelophysis tells the story of one of the most spectacular fossil discoveries of the twentieth century. The book also attempts to answer the question as to why so many fossils were found in one place.
In 1947 Edwin Colbert located dozens and dozens of Coelophysis fossils at Ghost Ranch which is north of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Along with the Coelophysis skeletons were a few fish and other reptilian fossils. The place where all these animals were buried is about thirty feet long and at least thirty feet wide. How did all of these fossils get here? Were the animals stuck in the mud? A volcanic eruption? An asteroid impact? Poison water? Flood? For each of these hypotheses, the book presents evidence refuting each theory. The author concludes that a combination of drought and flood most likely explains how so many fossils were found in one place.
In short, this is a great book as it reads like a mystery and teaches young readers the process of analysis. The paintings are great, too. Dinosaur Ghosts is ideal for both children and adult readers. Highly recommended.
